So, I stopped by my local Post Office here in NYC and requested the MPP. They were a bit confused at first, but were very friendly and asked me to wait while they looked into it. They told me I'd have to contact the USPS Mailing & Shipping Solutions, who would then provide me with a permit number, which would have to be brought to the local Post Office.
Went back home and ended making a Business account on USPS's Business Gateway as I was simply curious on available options. After making an account, I noticed there was a permit section with an option labeled as "Precanceled", which I was automatically given one upon submission, with the caveat of three $310 for the discount stamps, etc, which I can safely ignore as it doesn't apply to me. The system then shows me as having an Active permit for Precanceled.
I proceeded to call the number they gave me and after a 15 minute hold, spoke with a friendly lady who instantly asked if it was for philatelic purposes upon mentioning MPP. I said yes, she then mentioned they should have done everything at the local post office and that they may just not have known the option on the system. I then mentioned that I created an account on the Business Gateway and requested and received a permit number for Precanceled, and she told me that would also be my permit number for my Mailer's Precancel Postmark as it falls under the Precancel category.
She did say that I am still required to show them a card with the MPP stamp with the permit number, so it can be accepted into the system and saved with the submitted application at the local PO. Furthermore, a "letter" would need to be given stating what I'm applying for and such (Utilized a "letter" found online from the Mailer's Postmark Permit Club website). Another item to note is that she told me that only the Business Drop-Offs POs will be found when selecting a city. In my case, for New York, NY, only the Morgan Annex addressed showed up. However, as long as the paperwork is submitted at the PO of choice and the mail is dropped off there, I can safely ignore the Business PO site shown online. With that said, it will pull the next permit number available from the Business PO site. If you're really looking to get a very low number or even number 1, you'll have to potentially fight the local PO of choice to get the number directly from them if they're being difficult.
Curious to hear other folks' thoughts on all of this.
Also, anyone have any leads where I can get a MPP stamp made? |

Great you were able to make more headway than I but I have decided to not bother. I will simply sell and make a very, very small profit off the USPS and donate what I am not keeping for my collection or cannot sell. |

I use the Auburn, WA post office. The head clerk explained to others what I was doing and told me just to pile my outgoing mail on the counter. I typically have 10 to 15 parcels and about the same amount of letter mail each day, all canceled with my mpp. I use precanceled stamps on some of them. I was told I could drop off at any of the Auburn branches. |

Hello everyone,
I've been researching how to acquire a Mailer's Precancel Postmark for a few months now and wanted to share what I've learned. Throughout this process, I've personally obtained six permits from various USPS offices and encountered some interesting differences in how the process is handled at different locations (Manual offices vs those with computers).
The reason I signed up for Stamp Community and am making this post is to share the information I've compiled, which includes step-by-step details on how to apply for a permit, relevant USPS policies, required forms, and other tidbits from my direct experiences with manual offices (those without computers and not in Postal One's database).
To make this as useful as possible, I've compiled my findings into four Google Docs:

I'd love to hear from others who have gone through this process or have experience with precancel postmarks. Have you encountered any challenges or inconsistencies when dealing with USPS offices? Do you have any tips, tricks, or corrections to add?
Looking forward to the discussion and hope this helps anyone interested in getting their own Mailer's Precancel Postmark!
Best, Drudge |

Drudge: Thanks for posting this info! Years ago, I wanted to set up a Mailer's Postmark Permit. I enquired at my local, very SMALL Post Office, and there were no others on file at that time (I'd be No. 1), but I delayed, mainly because I'd have to spend $30 for the rubber stamper. About a year or two ago, I looked it up again. I can't find the Mailer's Postmark Permit website (I think it was something like www.mpp.com, but I'm not sure). More research seemed to imply that this was no longer "free," but required $150. Do you know if new applications would assess a charge, or is it still free as to USPS fees? I know I'll still need the stamper, but I can afford it now :-} Thanks again for the valuable info. I'll do more research on this myself by examining your links in greater detail, but I don't want to waste too much time on it if there's a big fee to set it up. Please respond to this post with any fee info you know about. Thanks!! Josh |

RevenueCollector:
Yeah! The Olathe Post Office! That was it.
Thanks for the link to the new place. Says they aren't taking new members tho. I wonder what's going on with that? I'd want to join if I could.
Now I'm excited about the possibility of doing this. The lady who works at my local Post Office knows me. She'll see me coming with these forms crumpled in my fists and roll her eyes :-} But she'll make it happen for me. She told me a few weeks ago that she's not going to stock odd-denomination stamps anymore. They have a very small Office, so they don't get much dollar value in stamps and she says I'm the only one who buys the 1c and 5c stamps (she hasn't sold the $1, $2, $5, and $10 stamps ever that I know of. I dunno if she'll keep Priority and Express still), so they're cutting them from the product roster.
I'm hoping for Permit No. 1 still. I doubt anyone's gone in there and filed a MPP, so it's likely I'll be the first :-}
This is excellent stuff!

Fantastic job! I hope your post can be saved by the administrators for those inquiring about this same topic. I decided to use extra precancels as "decorative" stamps for mailing once in awhile. For my situation, it doesn't make sense to go through all the hoops. I can imagine those specializing in precancelled stamps would love this info so as to be able to use extra postage for mail. |

I wish I could edit my post, I remade all the google docs and here is the one google doc to rule them all: https://docs.google.com/document/d/...?usp=sharingAlso, I really wish I could post in another sub-forum, and emailed the mods about my challenges to do so, but no response. Alas onto your replies: DC3: Thank you. Mastodon: No fee required! also I figured it all out in the document linked above. If you can find it on the internet, one of my documents has covered it. chris s: Thanks! That's a good decorative idea. |
