Guanyin is the goddess of mercy, and a bodhisattva associated with compassion. The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means "Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World". Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus, and then sent to the western pure land of Sukhavati.

To commemorate the 2550th anniversary of the complete Nirvana of the Buddha (Mahaparinirvana) which considered as the point of the Buddhism creation, Sri Lanka issued a set of 50 stamps, many of them show scenes from Buddhist mythology:

Vesak is a Buddhist annual festival. Although it is also called "Buddha's Birthday", it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment (nirvana), and passing away (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha.
