I have found this item in a worldwide collection that I bought from a dealer. The stamp is listed in Barefoot as number 14 with a price tag of £350 The problem I have is that the year of issue mentioned in Barefoot is 1955 and this stamp has a clear cancellation 11 FE 49 . Your thoughts about this stamp are appreciated.

I suspect the stamp was steamed from an earlier document but the gum looked too damaged. So someone took the stamp and remounted on a bogus cover. Just a guess. |

I could not find a single APIA cancel where the "O" of "SAMOA" is at the same height as the date line in the cancel. On all cancels, "SAMOA" ends below the date line. My guess would be bogus cancel, but a Samoa specalist probably is what we need here.. ..And only seconds after I posted, found this letter: So I'm back to square one. |

I'd say it's a forgery. This denomination was never issued in Samoa for postage. The £2 and £5 were only used fiscally. A £10 value was likewise never issued in Samoa for postage purposes.
The 'WESTERN SAMOA' overprint looks wrong too, as does the £20 overprint.
Further, I can't see this denomination under New Zealand in Gibbons.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

My reading of the Samoa section in Vol V of 'The Postage Stamps of New Zealand' indicates that the £20 overprint was on lower valued stamps, not ones also inscribed 'TWENTY / SHILLINGS'.
A fake as far as I can see. |

Hi Hans, The stamp was issued as a fiscal stamp in 1947 and looks genuine. The postmark is also genuine. It a nice example, and is not listed because it wasn't used for postal usage. I specialise in Samoa, and have a few of these stamps. Let me know any further details you want to know. I would certainly like it in my collection, a great find ! Many thanks, Robin. |

So this stamp is omitted from Barefoot? It existed before 1955?
hansthedutchman, if you're still around, what's the watermark?
Xlnt7, can you post images of a couple of yours for comparison, please? |

I'm still alive and kicking. The stamp is on paper and therefore it is for me impossible to determine if there is a watermerk. I have made a picture with my phone showing the back of the stamp before a strong light source. |

The stamp is listed in Barefoot 9th edition 2012 catalogue as Id 31with value of $250.00. It has an inverted multiple NZ over five pointed star watermark, but they are hard to see even on stamps that are off paper. With the yellow colouring it will be impossible to see on paper. Please check the perf, it should be P14 all round. Robin. |

Is that base to the "1" after the date correct, or is the cancel on the stamp part of one and on the piece of another? |
