The Pha That Luang is a Buddhist stupa in Vientiane, Laos. It was built in the 16th century under King Sethathirath on the ruins of an earlier 13th century Khmer temple. The stupa became a symbol of Lao nationalism.

In 2011, Laos and Russia jointly issued a set of two stamps each show Pha That Luang in Laos and Church Pokrova na Nerli, in Vladimir, Russia. Here are four maxicards show Pha That Luang franked with the Russian stamp:

The Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars is a cultural historical site contains thousands of stones jars. Archaeologists assume that the jars used 2000 years ago as funeral urns or food storage by the Mon-Khmer. Local legend tells that King Khun Cheuang fought and defeated the cruel King named Khun Angka. King Cheuang ordered huge jars to be built to store the rice wine for the victory celebration.

Lao Elephants

Laos was populated in the past by herds of elephants living wild in the forest. Hence, the older name of Laos was "Lane Xang" meaning "Land of million elephants".

The Elephant Festival held annually in Laos since 2007. Its goal is to raise awareness of the need for action to protect the Asian elephant as part of the vital cultural and natural heritage of Laos. The festival is organized by Elephentasia organization that works toward the protection of Asian Elephant. The organization operates in Lao PDR where the Asian elephant is in danger of extinction.

Wow. What a wonderful collection. What an amazing trip through time in the country I never visited yet.

Question.

I've noticed that in some picture some women are exposing their left shoulder and others their right shoulder. Does it have any meaning, like married/unmarried, or it is just a personal preference?
