My profile photo is in homage to my 3rd great grandfather's collection of personal mail, this was a cover he received from the "Old Guard", a veterans club in NYC (He served in the Union in the Civil War). The letter that was saved with the cover is curious, as it doesn't seem to match the October date of the postmark (the letter is dated Feb 7, 1893). Unless of course the mail in New York City was abysmal in 1893, which I highly doubt. I have redacted his last name on the cover for my privacy. |

Esperanto and other international auxiliary languages have been my number one topical area since the late 1990s, so I chose my favorite Esperanto stamp (Austria Scott #563). |

I wanted a user name I could remember that wasn't too common and already taken. I thought about famous people from my general area. Then I thought about a picture from a stamp.
I also found it interesting that the country producing the stamp of Quanah Parker was from Africa. What does Quanah have to do with Africa? The sticker like stamp from a prolific producer of stamps for western collectors was an interesting contrast to all the classic vintage USA stamp avatars. |

Quote: What does Quanah have to do with Africa? Africa saw an opportunity to extract cash from an American's wallet. |

I think this one has been asked in the past, but always a good read regardless!
When I was a kid, someone bought be a Matchbox car instead of a Barbie doll. One of the first cars I loved were Duesenbergs. Hence a Duesy for my profile! |

Nice story, thanks for sharing! That's really good to see (almost) everyone has a story to tell about its profile picture. |

Mine is Scott 1244, one of the 3 very first mint NH singles I bought at the Roosevelt Field Gimbels stamp department in July 1971. I was just about turning 14 at the time .
The 1964 Worlds Fair was one of my happiest memories I have with my dad who passed just a few years later . |

What a great topic and enjoyable read (says the guy who still can't decide). rogdcam - "I sold my US collection as well as my collection of Russia and 34 red boxes of 102 cards along with cartons of stamp stuff and am now stamp free." That is fascinating and refreshing to hear. Your posts/contributions have been incredibly helpful to me in the past - Cheers to all. |
