Everything is collectible and worth keeping to someone. We can wait for further comments, but my first thought is that what you have may have more sentimental value from your memory of your collector husband than any high resale value.
Speaking in very general terms, the vast majority of covers from the 1880s are collectible, but tend to have somewhat minimal values - especially those from eastern and middle American states. Ones that tend to have slightly higher values tend to be from unusual western towns or even better from unusual places like Hawaii and Alaska or from very small towns that no longer exist. Older and unusual covers tend to be more desirable such as ones from old western towns, from southern (Confederate held) towns during the Civil War, Hawaii, etc. or that was send by an unusual method such as steamboat, ship, Wells Fargo Express, etc. Again, you will want to have a knowledgeable expert take the time to look at what you have to sort out anything for which you might get more than a couple dollars for.
If he belonged to a local club or national organization seek help there from someone to help evaluate what you have. Posting additional pictures of items will also bring you more, advise.
