I'm trying to fill in the sections in my Belgium Parcel Post stamps with the 1920 and 1920-21 issues with the train wheel design.

The Scott catalog lists the train and the wheel designs twice--and they do look different, but I can't figure how to tell which are which. Scott says the difference is in the little underline below the values, but there AREN'T any lines on the ones that have cents or franks-n-cents denominations :-}

I'm hoping that someone here knows a good way to determine which is which. Like I say, Scott isn't giving me good hints on this matter.

I have a small group of these stamps, but my album is empty in these issues because I can't determine what goes where. I've consulted the WorldStampAlbums but even this isn't helping me out. It sure doesn't help that these railway/parcel post issues are notoriously heavily cancelled :-}

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Josh

The 1920-21 design has less shading. Below is a 1920 issue followed by the revised issue. Note that there is less shading below the laurel leaves and around the top value tablet.

The Stanley Gibbons Benelux catalogue (1988 edition) says:

Quote:
In Type P 71 [i.e. the redrawn wheel design] the wings are larger and the feathering more detailed; there is no shading on the wheel-spokes, and the numerals are on a background of lined squares.

In Type P72 [i.e. the redrawn train design] the engine carries three head lams instead of one, the make-up of the train is different, and the last coach is clear of the curved line of the frame. The lettering at the top of stamp is smaller.

Does that help?

Hey!

Thanks for the info! The pix are very helpful, and the train description will give me something to look for when I review my stamps later.

Hopefully I'll be able to sort these out and get them organized into my album rather than on a stock-page at the back of the book :-}

Thank you BOTH so much!!

Josh
