To mml1942: the ID work is comprehensive and very useful, However I do not approve of their recommendation for the use of a graphite smear to mark the grill points. Bill and I used to go rounds on this in our personal chats. (I miss him nonetheless).
The black smear alters the condition of the stamp and should be avoided assiduously. Some people took to the expedient of laying down the graphite puddle, and then placing the stamp face up on it and giving it a bit of movement. That too often resulted in a ruinous mess that did little to help with the ID. But even at its "best," when properly finger applied, it still deposits foreign material on an otherwise clean stamp. As an auctioneer Bill tended to wink at that identification mark, but that was then.
Today there are better ways to go.
