Melilla :
is a 12.3 square kilometres autonomous city of Spain and an exclave on the north coast of Morocco. Melilla, along with the Spanish exclave Ceuta, is one of the two Spanish territories located in mainland Africa. It was regarded as a part of Málaga province prior to 14 March 1995, when the city's Statute of Autonomy was passed.

It is surprising that Morocco has not demanded the return of the enclaves.

@ rohumpy; they have, several times:

Quote:
Political statusMelilla and Ceuta are the only two European-Union territories located in mainland Africa.

The government of Morocco has repeatedly requested from Spain the sovereignty of Ceuta and Melilla, of Perejil Island, and of some other small areas lacking permanent population. The Spanish position is that both Ceuta and Melilla are integral parts of the Spanish state, and have been since the 15th century, centuries before Morocco's independence from France in 1956. Morocco denies these claims and maintains that the Spanish presence on or near its coast is a remnant of the colonial past which should be ended. The United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories does not include these Spanish territories.

I have never seen these stamps before. They are neat! It is surprising that in all the Spanish classes I took in school, we never talked about Melilla. I learned something new today!

By one of my favourite Philatelic Journalists.

Despite the controversy, several Spanish Philatelists claim these to be fully legitimate, having been authorised by the Spanish Authorities.

What an interesting set of stamps. MIlitary symbols, Viva Espana etc. :)

I was intrigued by the 6 pointed star and wondered if it was meant as a Jewish symbol. Wikipedia says it used to be 20% Jewish population and now down to just 5%. Interesting reading.

Hi Guys,
Thanks Perf12.

Google translate.

Created for use as a franchise by the expeditionary army sent to Melilla in late 1893 and early 1894 (see dates of arrival and repatriation), these stamps were already involved in police actions, as reported in the newspaper La Correspondencia de España. And they were not exempt from furious criticism (The Spanish Enlightenment) and of inflamed controversy (Carreras Candi article).

They were included in the catalogs under the heading of Morocco until, in 1971, fruit of the tenacity and the study of people like Manuel Martínez Alvarez or E. Aurioles, among others, are restored to Spanish philately and are classified as Military Postcard Franchises. It was precisely Mr. Martínez Álvarez who donated the lithographic stones with which the stamps were printed to the Army Museum in 1972.

In 1972, it was planned by the General Post Office that the commemorative issue of the Day of the Seal consisted of the reproduction of the 1893, with the postmark of Melilla (Malaga) and a value of two pesetas. Finally the project was annulled, despite already having the sketches very advanced.
