Wow, 6 cylinders, 5 pressmen, big as house, some Hoe press.

This Hoe was much smaller at only 41x28 inches

Now that we're splitting print-related subjects for easy searching, perhaps these last two great images could be refiled under a new thread called Hoe Printing Presses before we start getting lots of non-video posts (i.e. photographs) here? Just a thought.

The four stations in one Hoe press was used by the BEP to print U.S. flat plate stamps. Here's a link with more information:

Here is an article from the Australian Stamp Bulletin December 1973.
It has some excellent information concerning the printing of the 1973 Famous Australians
stamp issue by the Note Printing Branch using Hoe rotary intaglio presses.

Lithograving,

the word ROTARY may be misleading! It just indicates the use of cylinders (or curved plates) that rotate! Another aspect is whether the press was sheet-fed or reel-fed! Rotary opposed to flat-bed!

Practically ALL photogravure presses use cylinders but not all were reel-fed...

groetjes, Rein

Well Rein I only quoted the article where it states
Hoe rotary intaglio presses.
But you're right all this rotary stuff might be confusing.

And here a Utube video showing a Heidelberg XL-105 6 color
sheetfed press which prints 18,000 sheets per hour.
It is not printing stamps in this video but offset
Heidelberg presses like this are being used for
instance by the Canadian printers Lowe Martin and
Canadian Bank Note Co also has a 6 colour Heidelberg.

I still find it hard to comprehend, how drawing on a stone with a wax crayon, can produce such brilliant work.
It somehow defies understanding.

"The designs were so intricate that Prang sometimes had to used up to 40 stones for one design. "

"and saw" ? = guillotine?
