From the following census, it appears that there are around 57 copies of Canada Scott # 3 known (19 mint singles, 4 mint pairs, 23 used singles, 2 used pairs and 3 used singles on cover). See https://siegelauctions.com/display_...us.php?id=37

jogil...I would say there are probably more out there than we know..Collectors are some time not forth coming on their private collection..

I will give you and example..I have a coin collection and I was driving with my friend Jim (Watermark knows who I mean)..Anyway I was talking about a 1969 large date dime (Canadian), only about maybe 12 known ($12.000.00 to $13.000.00 coin)...He said he knew a collector that had about 7 or 8 that no one knew about and could sell it to me for about $8.000.00.

I relate that type of activity to stamp collecting also..Know what I mean.

Robert

True wert, but this stamp is over 150 years old so that it wouldn't be as easy to hide after all of this time in comparison to something that is not as old.

Still believe there are more out there...There was 51,000 printed, but roughly 1400+ were ever used and the rest were sent back/destroyed....

Now taking the accepted knowledge of how many stamps still exist,, and this is the consensus of most stamp collectors that about 10% of any old stamp may still be around...In that case roughly around 144+ are still out there..Where are they..?
Either not out there or HIDDEN.

On a stamp such as Canada Scott # 3 I think the census is relatively accurate. It has been a very popular stamp and will always be illustrated in auction catalogues. Given the high face value it is a stamp that attracts attention. If there are another 20% (12 stamps) that would a lot. I have done a census of certain fancy cancels and the truly scarce items increased by no more than 20% while common types could increase as much as 150% due to availablity of illustrations on the internet. With postal history the finding of a large correspondence could change the numbers. With the 12d a finding of a large block would come on the market due to the large value and become known.

I'm pretty sure to have seen a block of 4 at Canadian postal museum at the time in Gatineau in the years 90 can be wrong but I remember that it was 40k for a mint one and a block was invaluable . I tough about it for a long time can't be only.my imagination

Usually these larger pieces may be from plate proofs. The Canadian Government Postal Stamp Archive in Ottawa may have items not in the census because it is in their collections. See:

audetnelson1: welcome to the Forum. Does the poll include Canada #3 with Specimen overprints?

One never knows when newly found rare stamps might turn up. On May 2, 2017, Daniel F. Kelleher in the US auctioned off 100 complete sets of the 1934 Mexico University issue, in post office fresh condition, in sheet and partial sheet format. The high values had printing figures of 1,500 for the 20p air mail and 2,500 for the 10p regular issue. This hoard was totally unknown until consigned by the son of the original purchaser, who bought the stamps from the Mexico City post office on August 17, 1935. So, one never knows.

There is one offered on eBay by a Montreal dealer. surface appears to be scufdfed and asking price is 37K CDN. A couple sold in last year (one from Sparks Auction, and one from Eastern I believe)
I had to settle for a nice 3P for which I spend my entire annual stamp budget (2.5K....)https://www.hipstamp.com/listing/ca...ate/16961577

The ballpark figure I have from chit chat with dealers is over a hundred, maybe 130. When classics were actively collected and studied, the 12d rarely chaged hands and the deals were more often private transactions. There are at least five covers I recall from memory, plus a few disputed with genuine 12d stamps, plus one or two photographed but lost (one a 4x domestic rate).

I recall a butt-ugly genuine one selling for high four figures about four years ago.
