Has anyone seen the black violet variety of $1 Eugene O'Nell (1294b) for sale anywhere? If so what did sell for? The CV is about $100 for mint NH single, but I have never seen one offered anywhere.

Thanks! The final bid for the mint stamp was $450. It will be interesting to see if any other information comes to light.

Be patient. I looked for 1294b for a couple of years. Then, about a year and a half ago, I finally stumbled across a well-centered mint one for $75.

I see the plate block that did not sell in auction. It has a plate # 32902, does this mean that every plate # 32902 is the color error? I ask because I do have the same plate block in the lower left and the stamps appear to be different color than the others I have. I will post a pic after dinner.
Thanks,
Robert

Here is the plate block I have. I do have others but I cannot get to them at this time but I am not sure what plate numbers those are. In hand, the plate block # 32902 color difference seems more noticeable than the scan. Thanks for any help.
Robert

How about this full sheet? Does this look like the rare variation?
Thanks again,
Robert

I don't believe that is the case.

"thePackrat" I don't believe the full sheet is one of the varieties. The black violet is really much darker the shades of violet on the normal stamps.

Thanks. I did not think it was. But what about the plate block I have scanned. In hand there is a color difference between the two.
Thanks,
Robert

The plate block is the right number of error color, but I don't think it is black violet. This article has a photograph that shows the difference: http://linns.com/news/us-stamps-pos...s-stamp.html Of course if you think it might be the color error you could it submit it for expert certification.

Does anyone know why the paper always looks brighter on the black violet variety?

Is it because the black violet ink wipes cleaner than the normal ink?

That is a good question bookbndrbob. There is notable difference in the brightness of the papers.

51studebaker thanks for the tip on where to find one of these. The seller had another one offered! In searching for the elusive 1294b I found an eBay seller offering a 1294 VAR with a red violet color error. Can't find any additional information on it. Anyone come across it before?
