All Hanukkah stamps have been recalled today, the day of issue.

Many Post Offices had not even received their inventory of the Hanukkah booklets.

And those that did could not sell them after they opened their HQ email advising that the issue was recalled and no sales of the stamps were to be made.

I have no idea why they were recalled, but glad that I was able to buy a few booklets from an outlet that had not yet read the HQ email.

Thanks 22crows for the lead to the Canadian Stamp News article, which follows.
November 14, 2017
New Issue: Hanukkah stamp release pushed back a week

Canada Post's Hanukkah stamp will now be released on Nov. 20.

The release of Canada Post's forthcoming Hanukkah stamp, which was slated to be issued nationwide today, has been pushed back one week according to recent statement from the Crown corporation.

The planned release date was changed to resolve a design issue with the stamp booklet, according to Phil Legault, media relations manager with Canada Post. The stamp will be available for sale online on Nov. 20 and in post offices later that week.

"This is an important stamp and we apologize for the delay," he added.

The stamp, which celebrates the Jewish faith's eight-day celebration also known as the Festival of Lights, features a geometric design representing the different types of menorahs along with a strong contrast between light and dark, creating the appearance of flickering flames. Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar. This year, the festival takes place from sunset on Dec. 12 to nightfall on Dec. 20.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, Judaism's holiest site, in the second century BCE, after the Maccabees regained religious freedom. The Temple menorah (a seven-branched candelabra) was supposed to stay lit at all times. However, there was only enough oil to last one day, and it would take eight days to harvest and press the olives, and transport the oil to replenish the supply. Miraculously, that small amount burned for the next eight days, which is why the kindling of a menorah, adding a light each day, is central to the eight-day Hanukkah celebrations.

Hanukkah has been celebrated in Canada for more than 250 years, since 1760, when the first Jews were allowed to immigrate.
LAST WEEK'S UNVEILING

The stamp was unveiled at the Starry Nights event held at the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library and hosted by Ve'ahavta, a Jewish charitable organization delivering programs that alleviate poverty. It will be available in booklets of 10 Permanent stamps, each measuring 28 mm by 35 mm.

The stamp was designed by Angela Carter, of Toronto's Entro Communications. As with all 2017 stamp issues, the Hanukkah stamp includes a reference to the sesquicentennial of Canadian Confederation: printed in microtype along the right side are the words "Canada 150."

The Hanukkah issue has been removed from the Canada Post/shop web site.

Here are two of the recalled booklets that I purchased.

NOTE #1: the image going through the top perforation is the same format as the Eid stamp issue, so I don't think that is the problem.

NOTE #2: I do not see any issue with the GT3 - three sided tagging - both sides and bottom.

The stamp image from the Canadian Stamp News article is posted in the first entry above.

How can they resolve a design issue in less than a week? This seems fishy to me. I managed to get 2 booklet from my local outlet today, just in case.
What happens with the official first day covers? are they available?

Someone should sacrifice a stamp and mail a letter to themselves or a friend. You may then get an EKU before the date of re-issue. Could be quite valuable someday.

Yes rather strange. A week for reprints? It took a lot longer for the UNESCO recall.

Hi Gilles, I am new to the site and to collecting in general, but just saw your offer to send out one of the Hannukah stamps to the first 5 people who write to you. If you have any left, I would be very glad to receive it. Thank you! (I tried to send this as an e-mail, but since I am a new user, the site apparently restricts me.)

Do you know if it is being recalled for something in the stamp design or in the booklet design? I have a feeling that it may be on how the booklet is worded regarding "Judaism's holiest site, the Temple in Jerusalem" since there are different current conflicting claims over its site regarding Palestinian vs Israeli claims. Thus, this wording might be changed to something more like "the Jewish Temple" without mentioning holiest site and Jerusalem in it. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Mount
