Army cover - passed..?  

 

Hi guys
Take a look at this 1945 cover (sorry..scanner broken)..and it is passed by the American Army..In the middle of the cancel is a number "30014"...Is that the person checking it, or the Army number of the person it is delivered to..I know..Stupid question.

The soldier's ID# follows his name. You could potentially find him by that or by unit roster, if you wanted.

Army Post Office #86 was first located in Kamehameha, Hawaii from November 13, 1994. From February 14, 1945 it was based in Iwo Jima and ceased operation in October of 1948. This unit was serviced from headquarters in San Francisco, hence the S.F address on your cover.

The A.P.O. continued to operate in other locations until 1963, when it was closed permanently. This information is from a book in my collection titled "Geographic Locations of U.S. A.P.Os 1941 - 1985" by James Shaffer and published by the War Cover Club in 1985.
