my numbers are nearly the same as those I see in his collection. Does this mean anything? Example my 858 block of six shows the number 22457 and the number in the picture on line is 22460. Those numbers sequence something... what?

Welcome,

Scott #858 has 4 different plate numbers;
22457
22458
22459
22460

You can lookup plate number for each Scott number (or do a reverse lookup and find the Scott number by entering any plate number) on Stamp Smarter.

So, it's like batch numbers. the plate from one number is a different plate than that of another number. blemishes on one shouldn't appear on the other. Right?

Yes, plate number designate different plates. Any plate differences would be consistent across all impressions of that plate. But note that virtually all plate flaws have been discovered for older stamps. So if you have a plate block which shows a blemish it is most likely a printing issue, not a plate issue. Printing issues are fairly common and are typically referred to as 'freaks' or 'oddities' and not considered 'errors'. They are interesting, especially striking ones, but generally do not command high value.
