I love me some Pacific Mail Steamship Co. cancels. They're loads of fun and always in demand ($50 at the low end, up into several hundred for the scarcer ships or more dramatic multi-strike pieces).

I gave a bit of a primer here in this post:

http://goscf.com/t/43579

In that post I showed a very rare multi-ship piece, with three strikes of ALASKA and four strikes of ARIZONA.

In that post I surmised that these were canceled at a central office, and because the two words look similar (both begin and end with the letter A, and are only one letter different in length), a clerk grabbed the wrong handstamp, realized their error, and then re-canceled with the correct handstamp.

Plausible. Uncertain, but plausible.

Well, I just acquired my second multiship example. I know full well that I overpaid for the piece, but I just had to have it. I've seen a total of three multiship examples in my revenue collecting lifetime, and I put these in the category of "if you see one, you'd better step up and buy it, because who knows when you will see another".

It has 2 strikes of the ship MONTANA and one of GREAT REPUBLIC.

The ship MONTANA is one of the more scarce Pacific Mail ships, even just as a single strike; I have only found one example in all my searching.

Why are they Internal Revenue stamps, please?
Wasn't the mail supposed to bear regular postage stamps?

Dan, do you have a theory on the multiship strikes?

These were not used on covers. They were used on documents, but to date we do not know which documents, as there are zero reported documents bearing these cancels.

Speculation as that they were used on passage tickets and as they all went overseas, that is why there have been none found.

A 1964 American Revenuer article on the subject:

Well, as I mention above I thought I had a plausible explanation for the first one, but that doesn't fit the second one other then similar clerical error. Because there are no documents with these stamps on them, there is no way to gain context.

Maybe the ship's cargo was transferred from one vessel to another?

To be able to better showcase and compare/contrast these cancels, I've added a new page to my website with the Pacific Mail straight-line handstamps in my collection:

https://revenue-collector.com/pacif...ancels.shtml

If anyone has any ships that I don't have examples of for sale or trade, please contact me.

Thanks.

It is interesting to me how much really good research gets published in The American Revenuer. Sometimes I was they would go back and reprint a few of the articles from the past.

You regular Revenue collectors most likely already know that the American Revenue Association has a research page with quite a few downloadable articles, but for those that didn't, look under Research.

The back issues of the quarterly journal are available from 1967 to 1982.
