Thanks for the interesting suggestion Rod but I don't think so.

I can't find any postmarks listed in StampsX for either GÖRAU never mind any old spellings.

The postmark looks to me to be an Austrian thimble (or "Fingerhut") and while 1889 is relatively late for these some smaller offices were still using them.

So far I've tried looking for locations in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia and Germany. I guess there are still several more ex-Austrian areas to look at.

OK next stop Italy then Ukraine...

I wonder if it could be GÖRZ (Gorizia) in Italy close to the Slovenian border?

This was a significant town in Austrian Illyria.

Another possibility may be Gorje in Slovenia which is Göriach in German but I'm clutching at straws here.

rod222,

in Stamps of the Levant Post Offices. D. B. Armstrong 1915 reference, does the author mention the rate for sending letters?

Like how much soldi for a cover sent from Beirut to Europe in 1873?

thank you

trabz.
From what I have read, thus far, and a cursory glance through the pages, sadly no.

The only reference I can find, and for the record, are these.

(I am unsure if he is making reference to Austrian alone, or generally)

To wit. (assume 1915)
The Austrian PO has letter boxes in principal Hotels.

Mails are received and despatched daily by all the foreign PO's in Constantinople and thence distributed to the outlaying agencies.

The rates of postage are uniformly 1 piastre per 20 grammes, and 30 paras for each additional 20 grammes or fraction thereof for letters, 20 paras for postcards, and 10 paras per 50 grammes for printed matter.

Nigel.

There have been 72 Austrian foreign Post Offices up to 1915, in 9 countries.

Interestingly, only 2 with names beginning with G, Galatz and Giurgewo.

Countries:
Roumania
Bulgaria
Servia
Montenegro
Greece
Cyprus
Egypt
Turkey and
Crete

Wow Rod! Thank you very much for sharing this.

It seems very strange that we've now seen two Austrian Levant stamps with different GÖREAU postmarks, particularly as there is such a wide difference in time period.

If someone faked these why did they use GÖREAU?

Hi,

I have a very useful little book called Austrian Post Offices Abroad, Part Five: Greece, Crete. Aegean Islands, Macedonia by S. D. Tchilinghirian and W. S. E. Stephen.

This was published back in 1964 by the Austrian Stamp Club of Great Britain.

It has a section with illustrations for each of the individual Austrian Post Offices.

One very interesting feature is that it gives valuations or rarity ratings for each different Austrian Levant stamp seen used at each individual post office.

I've never seen the other volumes but hope to come across them some day.

Does anyone else here know these books?

I have three other books in the same style:

Stamps of the Russian Empire Used Abroad, Part Two: The Black Sea & Aegean Ports, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Crete, Ship Mail in the Levant by S. D. Tchilinghirian and W. S. E. Stephen (1958).

Stamps of Italy Used Abroad, Part Two: Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, Egypt, Crete, Greek Aegean Islands by S. D. Tchilinghirian and RAG. R. Bernardelli (1964).

Stamps of Italy Used Abroad, Part Six: Dodecanese: Carpathos to Simi, Ship Mail in the Dodecanese by S. D. Tchilinghirian and RAG. R. Bernardelli (1974).

Indeed, BeeSee, we now know how it's spelt but still not where it is.

Does anyone here know of a list of Austro-Hungarian post offices or postmarks?

I have a list, but it's not available for me where I am right now. However Brian has a copy of my list, so I'd presume he's already checked! (?)
