Today is Heinz Sielmann's birthday (1917-2006) - a good day to pay tribute to a naturalist who spent his whole life studying and photographing animals around the world. On this stamp, up in polar regions with snow geese. Sielmann's TV documentaries were extremely popular.

On the 3rd of June 1844 the last Great Auks, Pinguinus impennis, were killed by exploiters of unusual species. These magnificent birds resembling penguins inhabited the shores of the entire North Atlantic. It took only a few decades for human beings to eradicate millions of them. Painting of what a small colony might have looked like. Cuba, 130 years later.
