Last one for tonight: pictures designed to make Rod put on the white gloves!

(Does everyone remember the Vatican archives scene in DaVinci Code? Think of that - and Rod doing that to check these stamps out in his new fancy catalog!)

Wow! a posting Tsunami.
Nice work there, Michael. Lots to get our teeth into.

Time to get out Dr.Andreas' monographs re the 1892 Arms set,
and the Newspaper opts.
See if there are any forgeries lurking.

(I wish I could read German)

Michael,
your "cool postmarks" 2 piastres brown orange, looks like a forged opt.
I'll do some more translation and confirm.

I'm not very familiar with this area, but trying to learn

Is "Azari" a town or village in Turkey? Is it unusual that it would be written in English on this 1889 stamp?

Learning right alongside you Chris.

Town (Pop 7,000)
Azari Region of Hatay
Lat 36:82 Long 36:59

From my limited experience these two ring Bi lingual Pmks are reasonably common for this era.

Note : Azari may not be the complete name on the ring?

It's a bi-lingual postmark Chris...has both English & Arabic. Nigel can tell you alot more...but they certainly existed...

Stamp is from 1892 series...and there were no stamps issued after this series until 1901 - so they got lots of use.

My guess is the town is 'Adapazari' - couple hrs west from Istanbul. Epicenter of the 1999 earthquake. (But wouldn't surprise me if another town had a similar-ending name? Again, wait for Nigel!)

Actually - look at my 1 piastre blue stamp above - my guess is that's the first part of the name of the same town....

Thanks guys! That's so cool that we could figure out that town by piecing together parts from two different stamps from two different collectors! Trying to figure out towns on the postmarks really adds another dimension (and level of fun!) to stamp collecting, don't you agree?

Michael, do you mean "east" of Istanbul? Near Izmit, which is where the earthquake occurred, right?

-Chris
