On 6 February, the female convicts were landed. The following description is taken from John Cobley's superb book "Sydney Cove 1788", and is a quote from a diarist:

"at 6pm, we had the long wished for pleasure of seeing the last of them leave the ship. They were dressed in general very clean, and some few amongst them might be said to be well dressed. The men convicts got to them very soon after they landed, and it is beyond my abilities to give a just description of the scene of debauchery and riot that ensued during the night"

Well, on this night, one male convict, Anthony Rope, apparently "debauched" with an Elizabeth Pulley (Rope and Pulley - you couldn't make it up). On November 2, their son, Robert, was christened. He was, apparently, the first white child conceived and born in Australia.

Anthony Rope and Elizabeth Pulley are my wife's Great, Great, Great, Great Grandparents.

So there. And so endeth today's history lesson.

jubilee now thats something to be very proud of. To hear that a solid relationship blossomed into a family out of this time in history is so nice to know about. I hope very much that I have not insulted your family. That is amazing you can trace your family back that far and thanks for the insight. Humbly KGV
