29¢ Flag Over White House PNCs

I collect all of the U.S., with an emphasis on Air Mail and the 1976-1995 stamps. As part of my 1976-1995 specialised collection, I thought you folks would like to see the used plate number singles from my favourite definitive of the era, the 29¢ Flag Over The White House...





I only need one more plate number (no. 18) to complete the set.

Aah, the vagaries of our language. In Australia, a PNC is a Philatelic Numismatic Cover (ie, a cover with a coin in a window)

Do these stamps have a plate number below the design?

jubilee......a PNC is a Plate Number Coil.....numbers are in the bottom margins.

Is that complete David, all numbers from 1-16?

It is quite interesting and the best part of it is that they are a definitive issue that can be had from mixtures if one is willing to take the time to sort.

I can easily see how collectors can get hooked on subjects like this.

PS--my Hebert's Plate Number Single catalog that mysteriously disappeared in the USPS mail (last year) never returned despite filling out a lengthy page on what was missing and attaching a photo of said catalog :(

@ Jubilee. For US stamps, all Plate Number Coils have a tiny plate number printed on the bottom center of the stamp. It appears every 10 to 20 something stamp depending on which type of press the stamp was printed. Other Anachronism related to US coil stamps include LP-line pair; CVP-computer vended postage; VRC-variable rate coil. I'm sure there are others but these come to mind right now.

I had a look at Robin Harris' site - just like David, he's missing only the #18 plate from his collection. The value of that stamp is only 4 times that of the common PNCs, I wonder if the stamp isn't much more rare than that would indicate, though.

Good information. Generally with PNCs of this vintage, particularily those that paid a mainstream rate, (ie. domestic letter rate, postcard rate, etc.) the final plate numbers of the issue are difficult to get. Why?

Well, up until the recently introduced "Forever" stamp... as much as the USPS asked for various postal rate increases for a given date, the approval often took longer, leaving the USPS to scramble for make-up and new stamps (think A,B,C,D...). Since they did not know when they would need new stamps, they would continue to order more of the existing stamps.

Another interesting item to follow, regarding PNCs... when I lived in Texas, Jan 1, 1995 resulted in a new postal rate increase. The domestic letter rate went from 29¢ to 32¢. More importantly, the Post Card Rate went from 19¢ to 20¢. Remember the old 20¢ Fire Truck Transportation Coil? It paid the domestic letter rate of 20¢ in it's day. Well, the higher plate numbers for that issue (plate no. 16, I think) was expensive as there were very few out there. Well, when the postacrd rate was 20¢, and the post office needed 20¢ stamps in a hurry, out came the old 20¢ Fire Truck Transportation Coil. Suddenly the higher numbered plates were plentiful.

I am wondering if there are plate numbers 17 and 18 in various post office across the U.S. Perhaps if the second-step up-rate (the extra amount you have to add to the domestic letter rate at one ounce to make the two ounce rate) will ever be 29¢. If it is, perhaps we'll see a bunch of these in service again.

Think I am nuts? Remember the USPS caught hell from Congress for destroying perfectly good stamps that had values that were not "current"? It could happen. Watch your incoming mail!
