I finally got a Unitrade Canada catalog! It's the 2010 edition. The information contained is GREAT! My only complaint is that the spiral binding leaves a lot to be desired and I find it quite difficult to turn the pages. I'm sure I'll tear quite a few pages in the coming years. I got my Lighthouse hingeless Canada album just a couple of months ago. I know what I'm going to be doing for the next 6 months! Be ready to be peppered with lots of questions on Canadian stamps in the next few months! Thanks in advance for your future help! Now, if I can only figure out what boxes I stored my Canadian stamps in, waiting for just this day...

Khj:
The spiral binding is excellent... the book is newly printed so the pages are "tight". Sit down at the table, with the catalogue flat and slowly turn each page from beginning to end.
This will fammiliarise yourself with the layout of the catalogue and "loosen-up" the pages.
Nice album that Lighthouse Hingeless is...

That's great khj! I wish I had one too. I have a 2005 and have to keep going to the library to see the newest one. Link to Adminware site that has links to 2010 and previous catalogues and their additions/updates/errata. Not many mistakes but always nice to check. http://www.adminware.ca/admphil.htmThis site also has checklists for Canadian definitive series, a Canada tagging database, an award winning Great Britain Machin site, a USA flag over site, plus headlines about errors in new Canada stamps. Created and maintained by the editor of the Unitrade catalogue. Doug |

I love the Lighthouse hingeless albums. Can't afford the new ones and certainly don't want the big value drop-off once it is "used", so I always get them used. Quote: the book is newly printed so the pages are "tight". Sit down at the table, with the catalogue flat and slowly turn each page from beginning to end. No kiddig, it's extremely tight. I'm almost tempted to take it apart and punch 3-ring holes into it and put it in a binder. Thank you for the suggestion. Well, I guess I'll enjoy my new catalog by slowly turning each page one by one, all 638 pages... I'll be back next week... k |

I once acquired a Darnell album as part of a larger purchase. I found the album quite interesting as it had spaces for plate varieties of some modern issues, and the numbering system did not match Scott. So I figured they must use their own numbering system in their catalog.
An email to their website for more info remains unanswered.
I keep the Darnell albums for reference, but I do not have a Darnell catalog.
Is anyone familiar with the Darnell catalog, and could you share your comments/experience? Thank you!

The only Darnell catalog I had was one with EFOs (errors/freaks/oddities) only. I had a Unitrade at the time also so I didn't mind their numbering system, I just ignored it. The information was good, the pictures good, except the catalog had a few missing photos or had photos but no information. I no longer have the catalog.
I think there was an ordinary Canada catalog from Darnell also but I haven't seen one.
I think the newer Unitrade catalogs now have a lot of the constant varieties listed that at that time Darnell only listed.

Hi Kim...
I have the 09, it also had tight pages........it won't take long for the pages to loosen up some if you're going to be checking a lot of stamps. Just take your time turning the pages for awhile.

Thanks for the info, Doug! I was wondering whether it was worth the effort/money to get a Darnell catalog. Looks like the Unitrade will more than suffice. I will see if those plate varieties in the album are listed in the Unitrade. Thanks for the advice, Tom! I guess I'll have to spend more time with my Unitrade! |

If you don't need the adds in the back, then tear out a few of the last pages. That's what I have done, and it does make a big difference. |

Good idea, but they've gotten sneaky. There's only one ad at the back now. The rest of the ads have been moved to the front and other various spots in the catalog. Even the table of contents has an ad on the back. And the ads are included in the page numbering. Some ads are intermingled with the catalog listings. Not as bad as Scott, though. In some sections of the Scott catalog (especially the US specialized), I feel like I'm thumbing through a newspaper. |

I picked up a copy from 2009 on saturday for $20 bucks at a local flea market. Being a newbie this will come in handy for sure. |

While this is an old topic, I'll try to resurrect it.
My Unitrade catalog is a 2011 edition. It is SOOOO helpful with my Lighthouse Hingelsss collection.
I have a question about the catalog. I have a number 595 that appears to be untagged. I note that the catalog lists untagged errors for 594, 597 and 598 but not for 595 or 596.. Has any one else had a similar situation where the Unitrade does not list what you see as an error? |

My 2013 Unitrade says the same thing. Maybe YOU are the first to find one!! Or maybe it`s a faded OP4. |

Quote: Maybe YOU are the first to find one! Or maybe it`s a faded OP4. These landscape definitives are prone to fading on the OP4 tagging, yes - much more so that the other issues which used OP4 tagging. Sometimes the tag changes colour as it fades, as you often see faded copies with a fairly green tinge to them when viewed with the UV light, and sometimes it's almost straw coloured. Of course, it's possible that the fading & colour change are the way these issues have always been, as there might have been some changes they were experimenting with once they learned that the tagging was migrating and contaminating things. The OP4 tagging on the landscape stamps is much different than it is on the commemoratives found with OP4. The online tagging error database on Robin Harris' Adminware site doesn't show a variant of 595 without tagging, just some with tagging placement errors. http://www.adminware.ca/tagging/index.phpRyan |
