As Confederate Stamps are not my strong point, I thought I'd ask for help on the stamp shown below.

It was in an old 1890's Scott WW Stamp Album that was given to me years ago (that only had a few stamps left in it.)

At first glance, it would seem to be a Confederate Postmaster Provisional 58X1. If authentic, it would carry considerable value, but after closer examination I think it may actually be just a copy/fake that was used as a filler.

Anyone care to comment?

It is a Fake. The 2 is the wrong font.

The following is a Real one from a Seigel Catalog.

Thanks for clarifying. (I figured it was too good to be true.)

You never know. Bought a lot from a dealer of US Locals marked "fakes and reprints" for $20. Well 2 of those "Fakes and Reprints" were not. Total CV of those 2 stamps $1300.00. You never know!

Great post!

what were they thinking?
if you are going to produce a facsimile, surely
it wouldn't be too much to ask to get the numeral right

Thanks for your comments on this. I probably should have posted these others earlier, but I didn't really know what I had. I should have guessed they were fakes when the color descriptions didn't match catalog.

Anyway, they do make for interesting conversation pieces!

Not only is the "2" the wrong font, the entire effort is amateurish at best.

The facsimiles pictured were produced by S. Allan Taylor and sold in cheap packets. The ones you have I would date between the late 1870's to the 1880's. Typical of Taylor's work the 5 cent Baton Rouge you have was produced using a printing block that originally was used to illustrate J.W. Scott 1871 article the "History of the Confederate States Post Office" published in nine parts in the American Journal of Philately between 1871 and 1872.
