Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have read all rules of this forum
but am not sure regarding this. I have Developing Access Database
Program for Stamp Collection. It is prototype, and my plan is to
provide it as free if at all it is up to par.

Apart from Stamps collecting specially USA,Canada,UNO,India and Pakistan. I am hobbyist Database programing for Indian Music, Ayurveda herbs used for medicinal purpose, Medical Billing etc.

I have create screen Images of Database. these are almost 40 Images.
showing pertinent information Inputs. This Database at present is
by no means complete, but am sure after some inputs from Experts
collectors I do believe could be easy for Collection Inventory
from average to specialized Collection.

I wanted to show here but I do not know how I post images here
and also so many screenshot images. I do not want to violate any
of the rule of Forum. I would be much obliged if somebody can guide
and advice me please.

Thanks in advance

tikithindi

Post away, tikithindi.

I don't think you would be violating any rules -- you're not trying to sell anything. In my opinion, you're just sharing your project and soliciting feedback.

The image optimizer (on the upload page) here at SCF will help you scale your pictures down to 100K for posting here. You could post them on an image sharing site like Flickr, but the optimizer works well.

Finally, if you really intend to make your database "free" software, you might want to read up on Open Source Software and/or consider starting a project at Source Forge.

Good Luck and thanks for sharing with us.
KirkS

This looks really interesting. Access is something I've never got to grips with.

Speaking of Access...

For the Stamp Manage users here who also have Access...
The database behind Stamp Manage is access. With just a little effort you can link the Stampmanage data to another Access db and do a number of interesting things.

Hi,
Thank you all Kirks, Maiden, and Dave. Appreciate your feed back.

KirkS: I will inquire that, very helpful to me.

Yes Stamp Manage, Easy stamp, Stamp Catalog etc are good programs.
But lack lot of things. You may say well for starting its OK, than
what happens when your collection enlarges.

Actually making beginning with spreadsheet one can justify (with
new versions)but after all it it more efficient in number crunching.
it not Database. Relational Database in reality is the solution.
I am trying on access to upgrade to msql Database. there are information
which are left out by mentioned software.
Other part is that as hobbyist I did create Databases in Past
the one Most Difficult for Anesthesia Billing and Collection
(well it was in dBaseIII/IV). also that was my field so I knew
what is required for Billing and collection, and Account Reievable.

Just thought for stamps as I am using Spreadsheet now Excel,
was started with Lotus. In this my goal is that you have
to input minimum information, majority is you enter via
combo boxes. Big thing is I need feedback from other
Collectors. Interface could be created intuitively.

Also I am crating templates in Excel (could be latter use in
Google Doc). Reason that most of people have some sort of
Spreadsheet Program on their computer. It may not be
as efficient as Database.

I have Put all Screen Shots in Photo Bucket. Its Open
as sharing. Under tikithindi Handle.

any feedback will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

My biggest problem with stamp cataloging software is that you have to enter all the information by hand. It would be nice, if you could simply enter a catalog number, and a bunch of info is filled in about the stamp along with a picture of it. The you just select 3-4 basic fields and click done.

If your software could connect to a backend, and as users add to the software,it would upload that to some server where others could benefit from it, that would be great. Problem there is, the damn catalog companies guard their catalog numbers like hawks watching the babies in their nest.

The proprietary catalog data is always going to be the hurdle for any stamp collecting software.

I was frustrated by the lack of good cataloging software for my collection, so I built my own Access database. Over the years, I've manually input the entire Michel Specialized Deutschland catalog, including prices, descriptions, sets, plate flaws, you-name-it. All I have to do is put in a catalog number and it autofills the rest including picture. It would be ideal for any collector of German stamps... but I can't give it out because I haven't licensed the catalog data from Michel.

There are some good options out there that have licensed the catalog data, but they all suffer from one fatal flaw in my book -- I can't customize them to do what I want them to do.

Personally, I would not use Access, since I don't want to be tied to Microsoft Office, but I'm sure it would work for most people (plus I am on a Mac, where there is no MS Access.)

It's a shame there isn't one free online catalog where the community contributes information and it has a FREE numbering system, along with APIs to query stamps and stamp pictures. I know there have been a number of attempts to do this, but they all kind of fizzle and die.

I also don't understand the point to Scott catalog values. Every stamp store I have ever been in uses the Brookman catalog to tell me how much a stamp is going to cost, and most eBay prices are well below Scott catalog values.

Personally, I really don't care what my collection is worth. I'm not planning to sell it.

Hi apastuzak and PostmasterGS,

Many thanks... yes apastuzak it is possible to do that way.
you just either scroll through or input some info and..
see if that is your stamp you grab all data.
Question will come you acquired (purchase, free etc),Date,
format,Quantity, Price paid.. you have to jot in.
Next is you will examine your Stamp.. Does it match
to all Specifications at the time Issued ?, are there any
differences ? sort of EFO , is it Variety or Major error,
Freak or Oddity ?, Conterfiet or Forgery, if used than cancellation,
etc etc.these things only collector on deep Examination have to make
decision.

What I am saying that there are two parts One Postal Item Issued
By authorities with certain specifications officially.

Second part is after issued. some other Specifications
got in to it e.g. Missing Color, Design, Inversion of design
knowingly by Authority or accidentally. One can easily see
e.g. Particular country, year and see Image and get all
information filled in. But second part is Subjective
where one will have to input information.

PostmasterGS I agree that Catalog Companies have copy rights.
I am not putting their Nos or Stamp Images from their catalogs.

e.g. say arbitrarily systemno id is USA-A87-0001 you could call it serial
Number. this one is the Item ... now x calls 125n, y calls it v137s,
Z calls it USA4589 it does not matter
these are the fields person fills out in his or her diary (Software
or spreadsheet) Proprietary or Copyrighted data in not included
into software. This is hurdle I 100% agree. and again numbering
system will evolve, till that time somebody or system can utilize
system numbering user correlates it.

At present am just concentrating Correct Schema of Relational
Database.
Later one can utilize different utilities and tool to make
data grabbing and entering.

Many thanks
tikithindi

Microsoft Access does have a email feature which allows information/data to be sent from one user(s) to another and then automatically uploads the info to their database when opened.
You could then create a want list of data,
send that list to other users of that database,
who could then upload it to their database,
run a query to retrieve info,
then export it back into an email and return it to the originator,
where they upload the needed data to fill in their gaps....

Sounds good....on paper!

Paul

Hi apastuszak,

I agree that one does not have to use Access. MYSQL is Database and
Database Sever free, and could be utilized.
Just to get Efficient Schema of Relational Database with Noramlised
Entities. Its nice to use. I use because I have it. You could
make schema with Datametric's Dezign software too.

Once you have Entities and Attributes, rest is the interface with users.
Java,C++, or Linux could be used. In Late 80's I have participated
in the Universal numbering system Forum but that also died.
There is on Wiki Books World Stamp Catalog is in progress.
I am yet not well versed in Wikipedia and Wiki book Editing
so unable to put some information, am though learning that too.

Universal Postal Union Made WNS numbering which is good but
to some extent not satisfactory. I believe sooner or later
there will be Server site where free Philatelic World Catalog
with all info will be there. I like Wiki very much.
Numbering system like ISBN type would be great asset.
plsllvn:

Access 2007 has some email function and Data could be sent and
collected.

tikithindi.

Here is what annoying about a universal numbering scheme. If you did the US, you would probably want to number them sequentially. So, Ben Franklin would be 1 and George Washington 2. Well, that's pretty much Scott's numbering scheme. We'd pretty much get an immediate cease and desist.

I like Access and have been using it for close to 20 years, in engineering and for my stamp collection. You can buy it alone, you do not need the whole MS Office package.
