Commemorative Sets?

I have 1978,1977,1981,1982 USA commemorative year sets what should I start them out on on ebay?

Tina, that's an excellent question in general, and a difficult one to answer because what you/I think our lot is worth may vary vastly from what others are willing to pay.

There's a guy on StampWants (dougrugman) who has a great reputation and starts all of his lots at 1 cent. The best I can tell he usually gets a lot of bids and ends up getting a fair price in the end. I buy a lot from him.

I've seen countless others that start higher (10%, 20% and more) that get fewer bids and end up with basically the same results at the end of the auction.

Notrare has a great idea also.

Theoretically, if you're selling good material it shouldn't matter in the end because you'll get what the buyer was willing to pay in either case.

How about some of you big-time sellers jumping in here!

P.S. - I know there's a lot of human psychology at play here also. Why advertise something for $199.99 when it's easier to sell it for $200 even? Why does gas sell for $2.69 and 9/10 instead of $2.70?

And while I'm at it, why don't we get rid of the penny and save $1 Billion, or whatever it is, a year in production costs??

I think we should keep the cent, but eliminate one dollar bills in favor of dollar coins -- big savings. KS

If pennies are elimiated all prices will be rounded up......not down......everything will immediately cost more.

You should try to auction some of them here. Someone might be interested in them.

This is a common misbelief.

We have been without our 1c and 2c coins for years now and it works quite well. Prices per item will remain unchanged. Only the end total gets rounded. If a basket of goodies has a total ending 1,2,6 or 7 cents it is rounded down, if it ends in 3,4,8 or 9 then it is rounded up. You can't be charged more than 2c extra. Sometimes you will be charged 2c less. It's really not a big deal.

I certainly wouldn't sell them for less than face value, if you give them away for less than that, you may as well use them for postage.

I have several US Commemorative sets,too. Looking back--as a newbie, I jumped in and bought one every year--now I wish I had the $ back from them. BUT, then I decided that someday, my grandson may be interested in them since I have been keeping stamps in stock books for him too. Some one out there will be interested in them on ebay. Good luck!

The guy I buy my sets from on ebay starts his listings just under face value and always ends up getting a fair price for them. The problem with these particular year sets is that they are extremely common. You can find them all on ebay right now as a buy it now from $4.99 to $10.99.
