I am looking for help on three stamps [at the moment] I will be using as part of an article for a British magazine. The first is a Germany, Allied Occupation stamp of 1947. 4 values 1,2,3, and 5 mark. I would like to know the name of the designer and have been unable to find it thus far. The other two are Cinderellas. The first is a UNESCO label from the fifties. UNESCO printed labels from various countries during the fifties and early sixties as 'gift' stamps. The funds went towards helping UNESCO worldwide. This is the one I am looking for any info on; Finally, I have this rather nice Cindy that I use a lot. Does anyone know anything about it ?? As you can see, the article is about Doves of Peace and I have been given 5 days to do it in !! Thanks guys and gals for any help. Londonbus1.....

No information in William Finlay's "stamp design" Lb on Hopner. A blank on the others.
If you are struggling for content, you may consider Picasso's "dove of peace" IIRC his dove of peace was adopted in 1949 as a worldwide symbol for peace, (subject to confirmation) and two of his dove designs appeared on issues of China, Russia, Poland and Romania that I recall. I can supply scans of peace stamps, or Picasso doves if you need them.
Good luck on your article.

Thanks Rod! I had not yet looked at Rigastamps, usually a good source for answers. I had a feeling my label was the Unesco Japanese but wasn't sure. Thanks for the reminder.
I have already sent the scans of the stamps which will be featured and they appear to have been accepted. I did not have any of the stamps with the Picasso Dove but I did think about mentioning it in the text. Of course the Dove and Olive branch was already well accepted as a peace symbol before Picasso's drawing and had even appeared on stamps. But the China set is very attractive.
The Unesco labels are very nice and I have some, but not all. This could be a future venture in my Cinderella collection !! If you should come across any info about the other label before Wednesday, let me know. I have drawn a blank so far.

Quote: the Dove and Olive branch was already well accepted as a peace symbol I think so It is the world's first letter, it was a message from God to Noah, pretty hard to get earlier than that :) |

And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckd off; so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. ------------------------------------------------------ The above pane comes from one [of two] Prestige booklets especially issued for Children at the Israel2008 International Exhibition. The Booklet was entitled, 'Noah, the Ark and the the stamp'. The Pane is self-adhesive and on stiff card. The reverse of the pane shows a regular issued Miniature sheet without perfs or values. It proved very popular with the young collectors and I myself have sold a few M/S's to kids at my Flea Market ! The pic above is one of the items chosen to be in the article. Londonbus1 |

....There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born The loveliest of all was the unicorn Now there's something you don't see on a stamp..a cubit. |

Just to let you know that the article has been accepted and will feature the top two stamps shown on this thread [amongst others]. It will appear in the October or November edition of Royal Mail's Philatelic Bulletin. Thanks for the snippets of info supplied. I have given the group www.Stampcommunity.org acknowledgment and I hope it will bring a few more members to our family. Londonbus1 |
