Two differing die cut coils, one image larger than the other,
differing sizes in the date stamp, and differing
serpentine die cuts.

How do you guys ID these? In Aust we differ by naming the
printers, do you do the same, or just by Scott?
Do these attract a "variety" cat number, or a full listing
number?
Thanks for any gossip.

PS would your reply also include die cut booklet pane stamps?

Rod,

Scott has assigned each a full listing number and they are differentiated by die cut.

Of the four coils, 3967 is perf 9.75 vertically and #'s 3968-70 are serpentine die cut 8.5 vert., 10.25 vert., and 9.5 vert., respectively.

The booklet stamps, 3972-75, are also given distinct numbers -- in order, their serpentine die cuts are 11.25X10.75 on 2 or 3 sides (a. pane of 20); 10.5X10.75 on 2 or 3 sides (a. pane of 20); 11.25X10.75 on 2 or 3 sides (a. pane of four, b. pane of 6); and, 8 on 2, 3 or 4 sides (a. pane of 18).

There are some other distinguishing characteristics but Scott says the die cutting is the most easily distinguishing feature.

Steve

Oh good, thanks very much Steve.
I don't want to get too involved with US coils,
I'll put good examples on a page, alongside your commentary.
I'll still assume they come from differing printing houses.

I recently bought some year date sets of US, 2001, 2002, and 2006. They were loaded with the various coils, seemingly identical, yet not. This is an area that can get tedious very quickly. The complexity of recent US definitives easily compares with the Washington-Franklins.

This raises, for me, a question--Can you use a regular perforation gauge to determine the "Perf" of the die-cuts?

As long as your gauge has fractional measurements (1/4, 1/2, and 3/4) you should be able to measure the serpentine die cut in the same way that you do for perforations.

Okay, now I need a new perf gauge. Drat. I just bought a short and long wave UV light to work on the Liberty series. Now a new gauge.

Thanks, tomiseksj

Can I interest you in some Machins? Canadian tagging?
Marine booklets? South African bilinguals?
