Scott Interntaional Vol 2 Question (The Split)

My question

when did Scotts International Stamp Album Vol II (2) SPLIT into Vol 2A and 2B (Sku 802P149 covers A-I, 802P249 covers J-Z)

I will page count tomorrow if I don't get called into work, however I just got an awesome looking copy of 2B (copyright 1979) off ebay and it looks just as thick as my Full version of 2 (copyright 1953)

what I read online makes me believe the newer is actually less complete but its so much thicker?? can it just be extra blank pages scattered thru out doing this?

I'm trying to decide which way to transfer the stamps, if I can just insert A-I into the new binder...

Scott has done some re-editing of the page layout and country separation over the years. All four sections of SI Part 1A-2B were originally bound together in the SI Junior, which is roughly 3 inches thick. I also have an older set of these pages (very few stamps) that appears to match the SI Junior and it all fits into a single Scott album binder. I've never started from scratch using new pages, so I really don't know what the original thickness of the page packets were. Once you start getting stamps in there, things will bulge quickly. The current SI Part 1-3 that houses part of my collection is in 6 binders.

I probably would not worry too much about the possibility of missing a few pages. Quite frankly, once you start getting the album pages a little more packed, you will realize that there are quite a few spots missing for stamps. In some of the intermediate to advanced collections I've thumbed through of Parts 1-2, it really isn't unusual to see 10%+ of the stamps hinged to the side or on additional blank pages. When you use the SI album pages, that is just a fact of life that you will have to live with. Some collectors choose to hinge the stamps to the sides along with the other stamps of the set or of that year. Other collectors prefer to hinge them on blank pages at the end of the country pages. Still others will replace certain pages with Steiner pages when there are too many stamps without spots in the SI pages.

Hi Edwin. I for one am thrilled when anyone posts anything about the Scott International series. Yes, it's true, I don't get out much.

Most of the following is surmise: The Volume 1 was split into two parts in the 1970s so it is possible that this is when the Volume 2 was split. However, the Volume 1 split was necessitated by a major reediting of the pages so that every country began on the front of a page, thus allowing integration of Volume 1 with Volume 2 and subsequent volumes.

My assumption is that Volume 2 never required such reediting (i.e., there were never countries beginning on the back of pages or multiple countries per page), so Scott might not have split the set until their inventory had run out.

Incidentally, I wonder how accurate the published pages counts are? According to the Amos Advantage site, Volume 1A1 should contain 292 double sided pages but I count 342. According to Amos, all 4 parts of the Volume 1 total 1139 pages. This compares to 660 pages in my 1969 edition which was published before the split. As much as we all like to complain about how much more expensive the current volume 1 is, the latest version does contain almost twice as many pages as the original and is on better paper. And, to riff off khj's comments, there is much more "white space" in the latest version to put all of those missing stamps! BOB

well, I did a quick count of the VOL 2 its a ruff count and not rechecked so your number may vary...
SI VOL 2 A-Z 1953 single part edition approx 651 pages (A-I 339, J-Z 312) in one book

SI VOL 2B 1979 version J-Z 368 pages, as advertised on Amos.

You almost motivated me to go count my pages when I get home next week.
