I'm thinning out the library and getting rid of some of my older catalogs. So, let's have some fun with it.

Winner will receive at no cost a gently used copy of Michel Briefmarken-Katalog Deutschland 1998/99.

This is Michel's basic (as in not specialized) German catalog. It's in color, with values in DM. It covers the following areas:

German States
German Reich through WWII
German Post Offices Abroad
German Colonies
German Ship Post Abroad
German Plebiscite Territories
Danzig
Memel
Saar
German WWI Occupations
Sudetenland
German WWII Occupations
German Feldpost in WWII
German Locals post-WWII
Allied Occupation Joint Issues
French Zone
West Berlin
Berlin and Brandenburg
Soviet Zone
East Germany
American and British Zones
West Germany

So here's the task. Germany issued a stamp depicting the vessel whose sinking resulted in the largest known loss of life during a single ship sinking in recorded maritime history.

Post a picture of the stamp. First person to post it gets the catalog.

The MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German liner that was commissioned in 1937. Six months later, it was featured in Germany's 1937 set of Winterhilfswerk stamps depicting German ships.

In 1939, it was requisitioned into the German Navy. After briefly serving as a hospital ship, it was assigned as a floating barracks for naval personnel in the Polish port of Gdynia. On 30 January 1945, the Gustloff was evacuating German personnel and civilians who had been encircled by the Red Army when it was torpedoed by the Soviet submarine S-13. An estimated 9,400 people were killed in the sinking.

Stampgal, congratulations on winning and thanks Postmaster for the interesting contest. I enjoyed reading the interesting link that Sharksfan provided. What a shame so many people died in the sinking.
