Well in this part of Ontario we have sub outlets in drug stores , hardware stores and even convenience stores. The drug stores and hardware store are chains and seem to be as professional as it gets but they are employees of the said stores and do not wear Can post uniforms. My closest is a Mac's milk simular to 7/11 and although I know the owners of the franchise whom usually are the only ones dealing with any mail they do not worry about philatelic material . Theres a scale and a register and then small area behind counter to hold incoming and outgoing. I was also a manager for a retail chain that had 1 small town store that did this and by the time an associate dealt with incoming, outgoing and general duties they lost money by at least 50% just on labour. Can post as I'm sure USPS will follow will offer these outlets to whomever and boast the amount of customers that will be in the stores so they are doing them a service and paying in the area of 3-5% of sales.
WT I did see the town for sale at 799k at the same time USPS saying that many of their offices generate less than $50 a day. Town seems like a good deal , almost looked like pettycoat Junction for those old enough to recall.
Rod you should Smell what I'm smellin living only 5 minutes from the US. Unfortunatly if you can smell it from around the world it will effect around the world. The effect of US default would hit all corners of the globe.

The stories from possible towns facing post office closures just keep cropping up. Here's one from a remote village in Hawaii that is only accessible by plane or mule:

a near-ghost town for sale (Scenic, SD) for $799,000? It has a population of 8. It has a land lease on a post office that is still functioning. Fortunately (I guess) it is on the USPS's current list of locations under consideration for closing!

MSNBC just did an update on this town for sale within the past hour, and the update is that the population of 8 includes 6 family members of the seller, who plan to immediately move to Texas, bringing the resident population to 2. I think I can agree with the Postmaster General that in this case that post office is a prime candidate for closure.

I wonder if I could send a cover along to that post office for a postmark. It would be an interesting piece, given that there aren't all that many towns with a single digit population and there's no telling just how long their post office (and zip code) will remain active.

I support Puzzlers and nitolures comments and add that these drug store sub-outlets will gladly sell you a booklet single as they don't have to follow Canada Post's rules of selling only complete booklets due to their scanning UPC inventory system.

Now here's an off-the-wall reason why certain US post offices should not be closed. They form a vital link for food and equipment to those hiking the Appalachian Trail!

I never heard of the US Post Office having such a lifeline connection with those hikers, have you?
