If I create my own custom album pages can I use the Scott catalog numbers to identify them or is there some kind of copywrite associated with them?

I would think so, yes.

The copyright is against usage that copies the catalogue in publishing, whether in print or on the web electronically. Personal use is OK.

As long as you don't distribute the pages to anyone else, you're OK. As soon as you give them away for free on the Internet, Amos will hunt you down.

1) Personal use is OK.
2) If I distribute them, Amos will hunt you down.

Got it thanks.

Here's the copyright notice exactly as it appears in the Scott Catalog:

Is there a lawyer in the house? (It seems to me one must meet all five criteria to get blanket permission, otherwise specific permission from Scott is required, but what do I know?)
Cheers, Robert

Use search at the top of this page to find COPYRIGHT -- we've had several good explanations from both legal and non-legal experts.

Trainwreck...you are correct. It must meet all of the criteria Sections (a) to (e). As you can see each subsection ends with a "semicolon" and an "and".

But it looks like raywrio only wants them for his personal use so it won't matter anyhow.

I'm not a lawyer so I posed the original question to Amos.

The response I received from the Rights and Permissions Manager at Amos was that as long as raywrio doesn't intend to sell or distribute the album pages he creates, he can use the Scott numbers and will not be infringing on Scott's copyright.

Steve

EDIT: Here is the response along with contact information should further questions arise.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your inquiry regarding the use of Scott numbers in your personal stamp album. As long as you do not intend to sell or distribute the album pages you create, you can use the Scott numbers. You will not be infringing on Scott's copyright by using the numbers for your personal use.

When the Scott numbers are used in a commercial product that competes with our own products, Scott is entitled to compensation, usually in the form of a license fee. The copyright notice simply serves as a reminder to individuals and companies that the Scott numbers are our intellectual property and one needs to request permission to use them.

I hope this answers your question.

Best regards,

Dave Akin

Thanks for all the great responses. And yes I wanted to know if I could use the Scott's numbers for my personal albums.
