Does anyone know if the 1847 website is no longer extant? I frequently use it to help ID Washington/Franklins and in trying to bring it up this evening, all I get is the website for an internet domain/hosting business. Any info would be appreciated. I'm really going to miss this site if its gone. Thanks

Thanks wt1. Glad to see its not my computer having the problem. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable subscription fee to keep a site like this up.

I recall about 7 or 8 years ago, what (seemingly) appeared
to be "out of the clear blue" Amos Publications was making
widespread threats to numerous websites and other entities
to cease and desist using Scott numbers or face lawsuits...

1847 (as I recall) (at that time) was one of the first to
tuck its tail and shut down, and, I was quite surprised to
see it (1847) back in operation in most recent years...

I'd be certain there are a few of you out there with more
exacting and precise information on the above to jump in
and inform those of us whom are lesser informed what the
current state off affairs is with regards to Amos and their
alleged rights...

I can not reveal any more details of this, but I have been involved in trying to get this excellent website continued by a larger host. Stay tuned.

Thank you Bill... the 1847.com domain is up
for sale... I was thinking about purchasing
it to secure it, and just gift it back before
it's taken...

I mentioned this on the other thread and I want to make sure everyone knows you can still access 1847usa, as well as other sites that are no longer hosted, here: http://archive.org/web/web.php

Just type 1847usa.com (or any other dead site) and you can still access most if not all the links.

I hope you can get the site hosted again Bill, it's a great resource.

Was the website 1847.com or 1847usa.com?

Thank you, Bill, for yours, and those who are working with you, on your efforts to save a very valuable resource such as this site. I relied heavily on it, before I got my Scott catalog, when I first received the inherited collection, and still do return to it, often.

Thanks also, to raymodj, for the archive link.

Let us know if there's anything we can do, to assist.

I have gone to "http://archive.org' and searched for "1847usa.com" and all I see is a calendar. There must be more to it than that. What am I missing?

Do those who are blaming Amos Press for the demise of this site have certain knowledge of this, or is it guesswork and suspicion? I ask because the site states on its home page:

Quote:
The Scott Numbers are used under a licensing agreement with Scott.
Copyright Amos Press, Inc., dba Scott Publishing Co. All rights reserved.

Since Bob Allen had a contractual arrangement for the use of the numbers in place, I doubt that Amos simply reneged on the deal. It is more likely that the expense of running the site, including any royalties to Amos, got to be too costly for him to bear alone. But it could also be something entirely different, such as health issues, or hosting agreement problems, or the inability to find site promoters. Until we get some solid evidence for one thing or another, I am not willing to point fingers of blame in any particular direction based on suspicion or guesswork.

That said, I hope Bill Weiss is successful in his efforts to find a way to resurrect the site and get a broader base of support for it. Maybe an ad hoc group of supporters here at SCF could be organized to keep it afloat with contributions.

I use the site nearly daily. I'd gladly help in any way including donating money and/or time.
