I am playing with covers with the 2 cent Washington 1890-1893 type of stamp...and am curious about the "cap on left 2 and cap on both 2's...i looked at the U.S. scott specialized but it gives me no more information than the regular Scott A-B catalog...can someone help me out in exactly what the CAP looks like ??thanks, phil

Thanks Tom,

Is the cap mean the white projection which connect to the head of "2" ?

And thanks Phil for the leads.

Best regards,
ZhangCheng

I have found an album with MANY of these "cap on 2" in multiple situations. Left only, right only, both, repaired/re-engraved, starting out flaw, advanced flaw, etc. Apparently, someone was doing a study on this and I end up with his 100+ such items.

anyone interested in photos of any of these, let me know, will be glad to oblige. Best of luck on the study. Brian

Just a little trivia for you.
The reason for the "Cap of the left 2 and Cap on both 2's" occurred during the transfer of the image from the transfer relief plate to the soft plate that was used for the printing. These breaks occurred when the transfer relief plate was not properly hardened. Due to stresses tiny stress breaks resulted and were missed during the final inspection prior to the transfer of the image to the final soft plate.
Maybe this is more than you wanted to know.
Ron

Barnosceola did you just say that you have 220's with caps only on the right 2 as far as I'm aware that is a rare stamp and there are only 2 one is a proper cap and the other is a printing flaw and not a real cap there might be more but I have only seen one documented real 220b that is used and graded at 70 and it was up for sale a little while ago for 50k there are faked 220c 's with the left cap coloured in (something to do with getting the ink off an original stamp not sure how Acid or something ) would like to see pics if there is one

This is the same stamp, I believe, currently listed on Ebay. The seller's comments make for a very interesting read on an "only known" PF certified copy as being genuine:
