King Edward The Eighth Punched In The Face.

Hi all,

Can anyone help me with the status of handpunched copies of all four
denominations of the KEVIII stamps.
I have the S.G. G.B. Four Kings specialised catalogue (eleventh edition) but can find no listings for these stamps.

Appendix 4 states that Type P was a handpunch used on booklet panes already overprinted 'CANCELLED' .

I have a complete booklet, edition number 356 date stamped on the front cover 16 Nov. 1936, all stamps on each pane overprinted with CANCELLED (12x2mm) and hand punched with cross type hand punch.

These are listed and priced in the catalogue but I can find no mention of stamps with the handpunch only (not overprinted SPECIMEN or CANCELLED)

I have a vertical pair of the ½d value from the top right hand side of the sheet printing which was bought from a very reputable dealer and also one of each of the four values.

I know that there was going to be a new edition of the catalogue but do not know if that has eventuated. If so, perhaps there is additional information



included.

Any help would be welcomed.

Very interesting, I can't seem to find any information on these stamps being punched without having the overprint.

Here is an image I've found on the net with the overprint - the punch does look different - I will have another look to see if I can dig up anything on different punches / different overprints.

Thanks for that response and it will be interesting to see what you come up with.

On this scan the top three stamps the handpunches are all different shapes and positions on the stamp.

The bottom three are slightly different but all are in pretty much the same position.

I mentioned in the previous message that I was not sure if the new catalogue eventuated and having checked I find it did. It is in a new two volume format.

I wonder if anyone on the community has the new catalogue and could check if there is anything further on this subject.

Any suggestions why KE8 appears on Scotland (Kirkcaldy) Newsprint?

Was paper perhaps in short supply 1936?

Rod, it might have been a newspaper posted (overseas, presumably) with the stamps stuck directly onto the paper for economy.

Then again, if it was good enough for Barwani State public servants to construct envelopes from old US newspapers in 1932





why, then, it was good enough for the Scots four years later. (Incidentally, the Barwani cover was charged postage due because the official who had the franking privilege forgot to sign it in the lower left corner. Can't be too careful, can you?)
