I've read about the 1290b variety, however, I find it interesting that the Scott Specialized Catalog does not list used values for that item. Is it just because of a limited market or are they that scarce in used condition?

Could the stamp on the right be a magenta. I am forever in the wishful thinking frame of mind.

I don't think so. Somebody's selling one on ebay and gave this illustration as an example. Note the 25c Douglass "magenta" variety is closer in color to the 15c Holmes Stamp of the same series and would have come only from plates 37604 and 37605:

The Scott Catalog adds this cautionary note:

Quote:
Shades of No. 1290 rose lake exist that tend toward magenta, but are not. Competent identification is important for No. 1290b.

There is a huge range of shades for this issue and some of them are a close to magenta but no cigar (I was fooled by one of them until someone else showed me a true magenta - it is quite bright) - there is even a note in Scott warning "Shades of rose lake exist that lean towards magenta, but are not. Competant identification is important for 1290b"

Unfortunately, some scanners do not reproduce colors accurately and on top of that many computer monitors do not display colors accurately, so it is almost impossibly to properly ID a stamp like this over the internet.definitely isn't

I don't know how to edit my last post

I didn't see there was a second page to this tread or I wouldn't have repeated the note in Scott the WT already posted. And the "definitely insn't" at the end of my message is not supposed to be there (it is part of something I thought I had erased before posting)
