I think it would be more interesting to get your friends to mail stuff to you. Especially if they live in another country. Just mail a letter to them requesting them to cut out the cancelled stamps on the envelope and to use new stamps to send something to you. |

There are 3 post offices within a reasonable distance from where I live. The closest does'nt have a circular cancel any more, and I try as much as I can to avoid sending letters from there. The most distant one has a round cancel but also is the most busy branch of the three and usually going there involves an hour's standing on the que. In order to use CDS on my outgoing mail I use the third one. They do have a circular cancel but some when along the way the ink pad they use dried out and nobody bothered to order new ink. Since the clerk there allows me to use the cancel myself, I had bought an ink pad and use it whenever I go there. A bit of a stretch, I know, but that way my outgoing mail bears nice cancels most of the times. |

Quote: I'm a bit surprised to find out that people think today's used stamps will ever be worth anything! Quote: To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour.

Australian Decimal Stamps and their value.
If I use $20 of stamps, covered with plastic to post a parcel. There is also $20 of face value, fine used stamps for the collection. This works for me I have already picked out my stamps to use.
As in anything that we collect only some of the stamps in the collections are worth anything.
Australian Decimal seems to sell well, in all forms at auction. KGV

It is my impression that a genuinely used contemporary commemorative might be a scarce item. Either as a single or on cover. How many modern covers are being saved?
As for mailing to your self, nothing wrong with it. I do see a problem, though, with the high values. Just to put the, for example, blue whale on an envelope and mail it is not enough. If it is being saved as a cover, then it must be a legitimate use, paying the proper rate. |

In most cases you most likely are correct Jimjamtwo, but, the high value definitives do command a good price if nicely used with a light cancellation. I have seen the $8.00 Grizzly Bear fine used go for $6.00 and $7.00 dollars - almost face! Bear in mind (excuse the pun) you have to consider the fact that these high value definitives are found, for the majority, on parcels and are cancelled accordingly - which is usually yuck :( However, having stated this, my collecting is for the pure fun of it even though there are some nice expensive elusive items in my collection. Heck, if I wasn't broke, I wouldn't be having fun Chimo Bujutsu |

This thread brings in a nice debate regarding covers as Commercial or Philatelic. I just was reading the same debate on this at another site, very interesting opinions. |

Hi stallzer Have been thinking about a cover posted to self. By using a self addressed large envelope to my PO Box. I could get a new postmark every time I posted it until the cover had no more room for another stamp. I can think of a lot of themes for this idea that could go on for years. This is something I am going to do! Having a user friendly PO helps a lot. KGV
