For those whom don't collect covers I figured why not also start a our own virtual postmark calendar. All you have to do is post in this topic a clearly postmarked stamp from anywhere on the same month and day that it was canceled regardless of the year. For example today is January 11th and a stamp postmarked on January 11th would be posted.

Well, 'dude, are you gonna start us out? My participation in this project would require a level of preplanning and organization that may be beyond my current abilities. I've never been willing to take stamps out of their "rightful" places for purposes of committing them to the assembly of a calendar collection, so they are all over the place. Once in a while I've thought of building it as a virtual collection, but... |

I also will have a hard time finding such an item as most of my stamps are mint. If I do come up with a stamp and it already had been mounted or hinged I would scan the page and then crop it to the stamp in need for the virtual collection. I came up with the proposal before I was ready to post anything. I guess the cart is in front of the horse on this one. |

Nothin' wrong with being the idea guy. Every good project needs an idea guy and a money guy. Now we just have to sit around and wait for the money guy. |

I'm not the money guy but having a good laugh. I worked with a guy once who said he was more of an ideas guy. Me and a few others found out that meant we did all the work.
I used to take out my collection and blissfully turn the pages for a week or so, smile and close everything up with a feeling of contentment. Since coming here I've been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I feel like I have subdivided my envelopes of used stamps about three times and I just know I'm going to get sucked in to looking though them just for dates. This is where Rod is just going to laugh at us off the field as he snaps through his database. |

Okay, how do you want to do this? Here's a January 11th cover from 1921. Do you want the entire cover or just the postmark? I won't bore you with all the scans, unless someone is really interested, but in the same batch of covers, I have one for January 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, etc. (haven't found a 12 or 18 yet), but all of them were postmarked between 1919 and 1931. |

Way to go Wt1. I no sooner turned away from the computer to look at a pile of scruffy looking 3c Queen Victoria stamps and the second stamp I looked at had Jan 12th. I had to check the calender to see if it was today's date but alas it is tomorrow. I probably won't sleep tonight. |

wt1, There is another topic for "cover calendar" you could post that one there as well. This topic I started for just a stamp with the date cancel (bullseye or socked on the nose) on it. There's something for everyone. Great looking cover, love the penmanship. |

Yes, yes, possible...oooorrrrr, Rod comes to the sinking realization that his file names are missing just one last important category of data... I, for one, have frequently included postmarks' towns when naming scans, but almost never a date, unless it is out of the ordinary (January 1, December 25, February 29) and I think to include it. |

Rotter! that's exactly it, I would have to go to each individual country, go to Covers folder and look at each individual cover....zzzzzz Time to watch, methinks That really brings up an interesting point how long does windows XP allow for a file name I wonder. some of mine are quite long. |

I think it is right about 255 characters. There are supposedly software solutions to deal with longer names, but some programs will choke on names shorter than the theoretical maximum. Someone who knows what they're talking about can verify this, but I believe the characters in the file path count, too, for how the file is handled. |

You're right Cjd, max length of a file name can only be 255 characters. Most applications can only handle 256 characters including the path. |
