Thanks guys for making me feel like a real fossil. I didn't see the movies but as I kid I remember watching news reports of people being shot or entangled on concertina wire trying to escape before the Wall was built.

Heck, one of my German teachers drove a tank in WWII. ... For the Wehrmacht...

Crap I'm old...

Baba

Your mention of border guards reminds me of an Ossiwitze. (East German Joke):

Two border guards are on the Berlin Wall. The one says to the other:

"Whatdaya think of the DDR?"
The other replies: "Same as you"
He replies: Well then, I've got to arrest you....

Those two Borderguard stamps were the ones I referred to that the West German postal service objected to
and refused to fdc's and letters franked with them. I've got cover sent from the ddr to the west
with them blackened out with a black marker

Baba,

The Bundesrepublik and the DDR had a "postal war." This stamp SC 930 got the same treatment in the DDR. It is a reissue of a 1955 stamp SC 733, "Family in flight," commemorating 20 years of displaced persons. The "Postkrieg" is a speciality topic with German stamps.

There is an interesting article on this topic in the Aug. 23, 2010 issue of Linn's too.

Nice historic cover!

Has anyone got a good source for DDR kiloware? I just got some off German ebay. It's all off paper and seems
like alot of CTO (which is fine with me). I'd like to find some other sources as well.

PM me. My DDR kiloware is sorted by Scott number but I'd be happy to mix them up again if you like hunting!
