I picked this up for 50 cents, but I have a terrible time with these and their types. I was hoping one of the stamp gods could tell me it's a C3a or 5 skelling error of color, please. I am really am in the mood to retire. Thanks as always - Jeff I can never get these things to show postmarks well. Here's my best shot at it. And it certainly looks red, I can see the 1 but not the lettering!

Hard to tell from your scan what the cancel is in terms of color, but some of the colors (i.e. red, brown, etc.) command a premium over the value of the stamp itself. |

My 2002 Scott Specialized suggests that a red cancel brings a $15 premium to its value. Don't know what the later Specialized catalogs might say, perhaps someone else can confirm a more up-to-date value. |

Jeff, the cancel looks like a red NYC carrier cancel +$20 in the 2010 specialized. |

I guess you didn't want to take my word for it, I don't blame you, I don't know you either. This item is from my collection and I believe this is the cancel on your stamp, it is a red NYC carrier cancel. The cover was delivered to 88 Wall Street. |

Didn't have anything to do with believing you. I could not get a good read on the cancel and I took your statement to mean that you thought but were not sure about the cancel. I have a terrible time trying to get the cancellation to show up sometimes when it is that faded. The numeral 1 certainly looks good and the PAID now that I see yours, is in the right place, so I think you are right. Am going to label the stamp that way. Thanks for your help Sinclair2010. - Jeff |

Sinclair2010, great strike! Most examples are incomplete and difficult to read. |

Jeff, where in the world are you getting all these great stamps for 50 cents. In the other threads, you show stamps that you got for 50 cents. I am green with envy. (Psst, care to share) |

Rohumpy, ebay lot that sold for $150. I got about 300 stamps that were cataloged at $25 or more and about 200 stamps that were minimum value to $10-$15. Was a great deal. I don't win too many because I am so cheap (cheap is another word for wife, 4 kids, house, etc), but when I win the bargains are usually pretty good. Included in the lot were a lot of duplicates so I will be setting up some great deals soon for everyone else so that they can join in on the fun. The thread I have going with the Wales cancellations contained about 100 penny reds and sundry other stamps that I got for roughly $50. Still working on figuring out what I have in that group. - Jeff |

Thanks Russ, that cover is ex. Wagshall and it might be ex. Neinken as well, I just can't prove it at this point. |
