I hope to pass along my collection to my children. I just have to keep them interested long enough for the collecting gene to take a strong hold. I'll probaly donate my Route 66 collection to a museum when the time comes to part with it, by that time it might be more complete. |

Quote: I have been toying with the idea of placing my meagher collection into a time capsule, to be opened when my grandchildren reach maturity... I have been contemplating this very thing, but with a twist. I have no children and am not married. What about paying for a safe deposit vault for 50-100 years and with instructions to have the collection auctioned off and giving the proceeds to your favorite charity? Brian |

My Guatemala stamps and covers could be consigned to the "International Society of Guatemala Collectors" for auction..the members would buy and avoid a middleman...my stamp club has a monthly auction....minimum bid is 20 percent of catalog and most of the stuff goes for 20 percent (1 bid) but hey 20 percent is 20 percent...lets be honest..as collectors..wouldn't we rather see our stuff go to a collector rather than a dealer ? |

Theres all the physical disasters but what about the mental ones? Can almost see older children left a collection that they look upon it as trash that took away quality time when they were little and tossing out of spite. The gentleman I received most of my mint canada from literally said come get it or its going in the dumpster and he would have tossed it too. Then theres others that just hope someone will enjoy whatever is in the box. Still that recent Japan disaster must of gobbled down quite a few albums . |

Nitro, thats just what I was talking about...was talking to a dealer with $60..75 dollar covers..he said his kids would dump them...it seems in many cases the children are better off than the parents who skrimped and saved...they apparently do not look at a stamp collection as a valuable or sentimental thing...i know in my own case with my fathers estate...i had my own "stuff" and he did not really have anything of sentimental value to me.... |

I'm only 42 and looking back I had a whole lot less than 95% of the other kids did . My dad didn't really have squat to leave except some great teachings of morals and values which is priceless. However that lack of having all the goodies back then is likely why I collect and Hoard now. I can only hope one of my kids would find at the least sentimental value in my collection or as you say it would be better auctioned for charity. I suppose it would be our job ( enjoyment) to leave some sort of guidance as to value, so whom ever gets them doesn't look at 5 albums and 15 stock books full and say where do I start. Then again I plan on cremation so what better way to start the fire!! |

You have to leave clear instructions and have a conversation with your family before you fall off the perch. |

At the auctions I use, is one answers to where the stamps go after people pass on. And at one of these auctions the profit goes to help stamp clubs in N.S.W. And if you are in a NSW stamp club and pass on your stamps would most probably end up at this auction. And in turn to help stamp club members.
"Australia KGV stamps explained" was put together so my family could understand this part of my collection. As simple as that! |

Another possibility is to sell all you have now to people that you know will value it and use the money to invest in gold coins...I am sure those will not be thrown out, come clean up time! |
