I use Gixen, it's free and very easy to use. What the sniping software does is eliminate the need to constantly watch an item as well as not running the bid up. Plug in the item number, your highest bid and walk away. I would imagine that most successful bidders use some sort of sniping software and you're not mashing keys with 5 seconds left only to find out someone still sniped you. If you plug in say $20.00 the software waits until the last few seconds and puts in the highest bid needed to win an auction. If you lose it, it's very simple...you didn't bid high enough.
One winning strategy is to bid 500$ for any items you like. Then when the sniper comes in with a bid of 35$ at the last second - he loses and has no recourse to bid higher. You have won the item for an amount no higher than one increment over its true value.

That is fine if the item is worth $5,000 but complete folly for a $100 item. Don't underestimate the capacity of sellers to link this conversation to your winning listings is chasa bears any relation to your online ID.
Sniping works to avoid anyone seeing your interest until you bid. That bid is made so late that they can't respond to your interest.
So I got sniped this morning, but impressively. I was bidding on a BOB collection of US stamps, which included several Confederates (legit or not, hard to say) and I was up to my max of $17. Funds are low right now so I couldn't go any higher. I was winning right down to the last 10 seconds, and expected one of the other bidders to jump in. But with 7 seconds to go, the snipes came - $47.55 - $55.00 - $56.00. Boom, boom, boom. I was so shocked at the leap I couldn't help but be impressed. Guess someone else (3 of them) saw the same potential in the collection that I did. Oh well. I've still got $17.
