Was there ever a time when stamp collecting was considered "sexy"?

It always has been,
in <my> mind,
then again, I am a history buff,
and the marriage between stamps and history is irresistable.
I wear my stamp collecting bent, with pride.

I was always fascinated with my Grandfathers coin collection and it was a real treat to get to see it- I was bitten by the collector's bug! My grandmother's dad was an engineer and he passed down a huge collection to her when I was a youngster. I just remember pouring through all those glassines and thinking of the places they've been and the stories that they could tell and I seen that look on my daughter recently and hoping and praying that it stays with her. She is curious in nature like me so there is a good chance. Also, I agree with most everyone's view on the new issues as they are just to plentiful and too many issued and aren't even usually worth a second look IMO. I believe I'm going to finish up my collection to either 1979 or '80 and call it good.

I stopped getting U.S. stamps after 1993, when it became clear that, not only were the stamps getting uglier, but they were simply raping the collector by putting out hundreds of new issues every year and collectors would have to buy more and more and more to stay current.

Forget that.

The last stamp in my album is the last stamp of 1993. I will never add another page.

That's it ! I'm coming to visit.

Stamp Collecting will never be 'sexy' or catch onto the youngsters until it becomes part of the school curriculum.
I have discussed Hobbies as a lesson with teachers here and got some interesting and enthusiastic feedback.....but that's as far as it went.

Somewhere down the line, Photography/filming was included in the learning process and is now part of the school year in the last two grades. There are exams just like there are for Maths,English etc.

It could and should be the same for stamps and Hobbies.

Londonbus1.

PS. Just to make a point. I never did like History at school, maybe it was the way of teaching or just the teachers we had. But since I have been collecting stamps, I have learned more about History than I ever did at school. Fact!

I tried to incorporate stamps and coins into my various lessons. It seems that students do alot more indirect learning from things like this
than direct from the book etc. Back when I was teaching in primary school, we had a letter exchange program with a school in Germany. It was
pretty cool. I think more teachers need to check into things like this. Hopefully, I've sparked some new collectors!

Stamp Collecting Today is "just not sexy"?

Was it EVER??

In this day and age, I think a nice, quiet, non-electric hobby is very relaxing...
