xquercus- Many thanks for the idea. I will certainly try it when we talk about printing methods.

wt1- You are an endless fountain of knowledge!!

Tomorrow night, at our youth stamp meeting, the kids will be learning about stamps related to the Civil War.
I am going to check the site you mentioned and see
what related material I can find.

I was told that it's the lick on the stamp which causes the toning. Better to use a sponge with clean water to wet the back of the stamp.
