I signed up awhile ago, haven't had time to work on my stamps until now but I've been at it the last week or so.
Just need one more stamp to finish this page, the R83 has a "repair" and the R87 has some freak perfs but they sure are beauties.

That stamp on the LHS
has a peculiar cancellation,
I have had a similar marking on a postage stamp
that has been awaiting ID for over 10 years.
Danged if I can find the stamp now, lost in my database.

Do you recognise it as a common marking on revenues?

Rod are you talking about the arrow cancel? If so it was a common cancel it was designed to break the paper to make sure it is un-reusable.

The "arrow" is a herringbone or cut cancel. It usually breaks the surface of the paper. Most frequently seen on 2nd and 3rd issue revenues, although latter-date 1st issue revenues will appear with it. That's why the 2nd and 3rd issue revenues have two tiers of pricing in Scott: the normal "uncut" pricing, and the much lower prices for cut cancels.

Next up: the same types, but imperfs!

my arrows were on a Hong Kong postage issue
nothing like the arrows on the revenue,
my mind was playing tricks.

I don't recall ever seeing a similar pmk design though
on any other stamp I have.

Wow! I just LOVE those large engraved revenues! I actually started collecting because of seeing Revstampman and revenucollector's posts! I just couldn't believe that a little piece of paper that was hardly meant to be stared at for more than a few seconds had that much time, skill & effort put into it's production and the fact that I'm a history buff just put it over-the-top! So as my screen name suggests - I LOVE stamps and those are a prime example of why I check the "refresh/active" button all the time!

Yes that is a herringbone cancel, this one didn't cut the stamp too bad.
But the R83 has what looks to be a notary which has made the stamp fragile to say the least, is that common for revenue stamps as well? I'm guessing that would be indicative of the document this specific stamp would be on.

Nice examples. I have all of those, but I'm not too enamored with my R99c. It has a lovely SON cancel, so it fits well, but it has a repaired tear... it just bugs me.

Here are the stamps I still need in order to complete the entire 1st issue set perforated, imperf, part perf, and silk paper (not sure these all exist, and I'm excluding double impressions, bisects, etc).

Some of those silk papers are tougher than you would think... I can't believe I've not come across a legit R1d or R30d yet.

Dan, I got my 99c from Rich for $700 a few years ago. Perf.'s are clear on ALL sides! As I'm sure you know these are incredibly difficult to find fault free and with perf.s clear on all sides. I just had to have it! The one it replaced had a heavy P.R.R. Script cancel and perf.'s just in on bottom. I sold it on ebay for $900 2 weeks later! Talk about getting a deal!

I will take a look over the weekend at your list. I have a number of dupes on the silks. However I don't think I have any that are on your list. But I'll look.

Yeah they will be the next step, those are gorgeous. Just this past week I ordered a R98A from Eric Jackson, that will be the jewel of my collection for awhile. Can't wait to see it in person!

Those are just absolutely beautiful.

R98a... can't get enough of 'em! The R98a is a great stamp; it's probably the most cost-effective way to get a large expanse of engraved 1st-issue goodness with the "olde worlde" taste of being imperforate. Sure, the R98c and other perfs are the same size, but there's just something about an imperf (of any type) with boardwalk margins that can't be beat.

I've got about 10 of them, but even with those I'll still never pass up the chance to pick up a nice one. They're neat pieces of history that won't necessarily break the bank.

Also, give some thought to trying to find a pair. A pair catalogs $400, but you should be able to find a decent one in the $200-300 range.
