Flemish Legion ?

just bought this. anybody knows the history of it? I couldn't find from google.

check Riga Stamps
they had his pages down for a revamp
a few weeks ago, not sure if they have them back again.

These sheets were created in conjunction with the 1942 Philatelist Day in Ghent, Belgium. The inscription reads "For Our Prisoners of War" in Dutch and French. They were handed out at the exhibition in small sheets of 4 stamps.

Here are examples of the perforated and imperf sheets from my collection.

Flemish Legion was an army corps fighting alonside nazi Germans against comunist Russia for (so, they said) the freedom of Flandes. Perhaps someone closer can give us more accurate information.

Very Nice Postmaster !! I saw a cover at a stamp show with some Flemish Legion stamps ..i could have purchased a flatscreen smart TV for the asking price...I have the Netherlands Legion sheets...but nothing like the Flemish ones !!

Their is a very good chance the cover you saw was CTO or a Forgery. I would not touch a Flemish Legion Cover without a GPS Cert. or equalivent. Many dealers have no idea weather what they have are legit or not. I bought the 1st Set of Flemish Legion stamps earlier this year (at a bargin price). I had to look at dozens to find 1 set that wasn't bogus. Many dealers insisted that theirs were good even after being shown that they were wrong. Legitimately used covers can run into the $1000+ range with a good cert. Caution in this area is advised.

Revstampman you are correct about the asking price..it was a thousand or a bit more...i couldnt touch it at that price ,it was probably a favor cancel...i can't imagine anyone on the Eastern front having them to put on mail !

Most were favor cancels. But, some were actually used although the number is quite low. The Favor cancels properly addressed go for $1200 or more with a GPS Cert.

BTW, when you need that flat screen let me know.

I'll second what Rev said about Flemish Legion issues on cover. The biggest problem is that the BPP no longer expertizes Flemish Legion issues, so it's buyer beware.

I've had some luck by picking out covers with (1) single issues, (2) accompanying valid postage at the proper rate, and (3) well-documented cancels that can be easily checked. It's rare to see a cover that doesn't have an entire set, which is a gigantic red flag. The CTOs/forgeries also commonly have a feldpost cancel. Feldpost didn't generally require postage, so they're easier to forge without having to worry about regular postage, at the proper rate, with the proper local cancel.

Here's a CTO that has all the common identifiers (for sale in the Harald Rauhut auction closing 15 Oct 11 with a starting bid of 200 Euro).



Covers can be had for $100-300, but only without cert. If you're lucky enough to find one with an old cert from back when these could actually be expertized, you'll definitely be looking at >$1,000-1,200.

Dosen't Guido Gabisch still do these?

Revstampman,too late on the flatscreen..my wife went to Bestbuy about three weeks ago..i have to learn a whole bunch of new channel numbers...my 17 year old 27 inch G.E. worked fine..but now we are in the 21st century !

Michel's 2011 catalog states that "Diese Ausgaben werden nicht BPP-geprüft," or these issues are not BPP expertized.

I have three Flemish Legion certs, all from Krischke in 2006/2010. Krischke is no longer listed as an expertizer by BPP, and in fact, BPP no longer lists a single expertizer for these issues. Gabisch is only listed for Feldpost Mi 1-5, 13, 16, and Ostpreußen-Feldpost.

I can't say for sure though, as I haven't tried to send any in for expertization lately.

I would still accept one of his Certs., even as a Non-BPP expert.
