Route 66 Community Poll Kinda Ot

I am interested in knowing of other collectors that live in a route 66 community along the 2448 miles thru 8 states: IL, MO, KS, OK, TX, AZ ,NM, CA. I collect route 66 postcards, precancels, pictorial postmarks, and cacheted covers. I was raised in Williamsville IL, & Sherman IL, and now live in Springfield IL all of which are along route 66.
If you do live in or near a route 66 town I would love to know more about it. Do they have cruises, festivals, roadside attractions, etc.? Also, have they promoted their events with pictorial commemorative postmarks?

Route 66 runs thru Sapulpa, Oklahoma, which is about an hour to an hour and a half from me. I can do some checking and see if they have any type of festivals or anything like that. As far as Commem. Covers I have no idea but will see what I can find out.

Sorry, Route 66 doesn't pass anywhere near Perth. LOL
I live next to Highway 1, which runs right around Australia.
That could be a major exercise, collecting covers from all towns along Highway 1.

For the precancels there are 140 towns and over 500 types. I am just focusing on 1 from each town.

I live just west of Staunton, IL which is on Route 66. There actually two different routes thru Staunton (different years). I always drive on old 66 when going between Staunton and Litchfield, IL. There are car shows and other events around here but I don't keep up on that.

It is nice to meet a fellow central IL collector. If you travel to stamp shows please check out Springfield Philatelic Society's annual Fall Stamp Bourse around Oct 26 in the Northfield Conference Center. You may also know of Rich Henry of Henry's Rabbit Ranch in Staunton on ol' rt 66. He was instrumental,with my nudge, to get the pictorial postmark for Litchfield's Annual Car Cruise. That helps promote Litchfield, route 66, and stamp collecting. Definetely a win, win, win in my book.

I lived right off Rt. 66 for three years when I was around 10. I remember watching the TV show and fell in love with Corvettes back then. I used to look for Tod and Buz whenever I was playing in the front yard, but they never came by for a visit.

I have only heard about the TV show, before my time, but it did sound interesting. I know it is available on DVD now, maybe I can catch a rerun on Nick at Nite. My dad had a 1975 black stingray with T tops, I even got to drive it a couple of times. I felt cool, but the ride was a little rough. They sit too low and you can barely see the nose. Where was it you lived on the mother road?

Dude, I don't remember the name of the town (if it even had one), but I imagine it would be a part of modern Springfield today since we lived close to the city then. Most of my Dad's relatives lived in that area.

BTW I also remember watching "77 Sunset Strip" and thinking Cookie or Kookie was the coolest cat on the face of the earth!

Grew up in St. Louis, remember my first drive-in was when my big brother & his wife took me to see American Graffiti at the Rte 66 Drive-In in Crestwood. Also remember a little motor inn down the road from there that were little art-deco tiled cottages with attached garages. Can't remember the name of it, but by the time I was old enough to know about the Rte. 66 legend, that place had become a little less "classy", and not the place to take the family.

Stamperdude I looked at thousands of covers U.S. and foreign at the stamp show...i saw a few on the pony express topic...but nothing related to route 66....Amazing eh ????

It sounds like the motel was the Coral Corrall (spelling) it was pink. It has since been demolished. It did have a notorious reputation over the years, something about a murder.

It really doesn't surprise me that you didn't find any covers pertaining to Route 66. Generally they are event or show covers, since there has not been a Route 66 stamp issued. Occasionally you will find a cachet with a route 66 theme.

That is a great article, I had not seen it. I did however keep up on Beetle sitings along route 66 from the route 66 Egroup on yahoo I am a member of. Plus it didn't hurt that he stopped in my town of Springfield and the picture was submitted to the local paper. It would have been cool to spot him eating vinegar fries at the Cozy Dog, I know they are Bob Waldmire's favorite.

Oh, cool, LeAnn. I thought I had heard about Staunton before...that's where Country Classic Cars is. I pull up their webpage to drool often.
