Personally I love the look of a perfect 100 year old gum shimmering in the moonlight. As if it just stepped out of a time machine from a post office long long ago.
Gives me a warm, tingly feeling.

Rod222 and all-- I've found several US classics that I purchased MNG, with an erased cancel. All of you who have mentioned this as a caveat, I think you're right on.

I've found that looking at it with a 30X or 60X, you can see where the surface of the stamp has been scrubbed. I think you can use UV, but just wanted to mention that looking for evidence of scrubbing at high magnification works also.....
