here's a couple mourning cards I picked up at stamp club auction tonight the first one has a Pan American Exposition cancel on it. Some of the members were getting excited that it was a mckinley assassination card. Too bad its 7 months too early Richard

A mourning stamp is a stamp, often black-bordered issued shortly after the death of a prominant person. Often there is an official or prescribed period of mourning, usually reserved for heads-of-state. Look at the black-bordered stamps from 1934 with Paul Von Hindenburg (Germany) and those from 2002 of H.M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (Great Britain).

Here's the Germany Hindenburg Memorial set David was talking about. It may be hard to see, but note the black borders: |

Here is a handmade mourning cover. The sender made it by running a felt-tipped marker along the edge of the envelope. The recipient trimed off the right edge to open the envelope, but included the message, typed on a 3x5 card, inside. Any interest, David? |

I never realized this
Does a black border around a stamp usually mean a death??? Something else I'll have to look for

Quote: Does a black border around a stamp usually mean a death??? Yes, come counties printed black borders around stamps of their deceased leaders, like the German and Jugoslav stamps shown. Greece even did it around stamps of Franklin Roosevelt. |
