Probably because they are fun to go through and it's always great to find a nice surprise in the bargain. That's why I do it, anyway. They seem to cost more than they did a few years ago, however, so I pretty much leave them alone right now.

What you have is called an "addiction." I have it also - that's why I have outstanding bids on five large lots on ebay and at Vance. I have sought treatment, but short of a 12 step program for stamp collectors I don't know what to do about it.

I feel for ya Phil

I was bored answering the Phones at work yesterday during breaks and lunch time. I won 2 lots from the same guy. All american stamps, I think 6,000 or 7,000 total

Modern-who you got that right..they do cost more...i have my invoices from the early 1990s when I used to drive down to Dutch Country auctions in Wilmington Delaware...used to spend about $400 and come home with a back seat full of LARGE boxes of albums, stockbooks, covers etc...but you cant go home again...about 5 years ago the wife and I went back...the dealers would not let me buy anything..they would double anything I bid on boxes that were nothing special..they take the boxes back to Philadelphia, Baltimore etc..pull out what they want and send the scrap back to Dutch Country auctions..mabe they add some of their own stuff...so now I look for people who have remainders left when they sell off their collections to a dealer...its easy enough to spot..when they tell you their father had a collection but when you go its usually a cigar box or a bag of mint U.S....the dealer left it behind !!

The grand fellow who makes up our auction lots has been going to the hospital daily to be with his wife and asked me to deliver the lots for the next auction...some of them will never see the auction table..i reserve the right to do some pre auction bidding...no harm done, the vast majority go for the first bid......

Thankfully someone is more addicted than I am. They significantly outbid me on all four items. Whew!
