Educate me - what is the Holiday of Diwali.

The first previously posted link explained it, but to summarize:

Quote:
Diwali, also referred to as the 'festival of lights', is an Indian holiday that also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, the awareness of one's inner light, the dispelling of ignorance, and bringing peace and joy through the awakening gained from this higher knowledge. The holiday of Diwali is observed in America, and across the globe, by Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, and Buddhists. One of the world's oldest religious holidays, Diwali serves not only as a time for celebration, but also as a time for communities and families to come together in spiritual enlightenment. The practice of Diwali has survived political, economic and social changes throughout history, while always carrying the universal symbolism of the victory of light, goodness, knowledge, and truth.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Paul Newman, one of America's finest actors. I'd prefer to see him portrayed on a stamp as Ari from Exodus.

Thanks. Have heard the Festival of Lights name, just not the more formal Diwali name (or I forgot it more likely)

I'm sure this is just one of thousands of proposals the Postmaster General and the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee receives on a regular basis, but the fact that 2014 is the 350th Anniversary of the State of New Jersey makes me wonder if the anniversary is important enough to issue a stamp in 2014. Remember, the USPS did issue a stamp in 1964 (Scott 1247) for New Jersey's 300th Anniversary.

Only if the stamp is just a series of garden photos, that way it will be in line with the 500th Florida issue!
